SUNY Chancellor's Horizon Award FAQs

Awards

The Chancellor's Horizon Awards for Faculty Research and Scholarship (Horizon) recognizes early career faculty whose scholarly or creative activities have already achieved significant recognition and, crucially, hold strong promise for field-defining impact in the future. Each SUNY campus may nominate one faculty member each year.

Eligibility

  • Tenured or tenure-track faculty (Assistant Professor and Associate Professor).
  • Within first seven years of initial appointment.
  • Must be a current SUNY faculty who has been employed at least one year by SUNY.

Additional Requirements

  • Nominator must be a full professor and have sufficient disciplinary expertise to determine nominee's qualifications.
  • Faculty may not apply or self-nominate.

Submission Requirements

  • Abstract
    • 1400-character maximum including spaces.
    • Must explain the nominee's scholarship or creative work and explain its innovative qualities along with its current and potential impact in the field.
  • Nomination Letter
    • Two-page maximum.
    • From a full Professor from the same/related department/division and on the same campus as nominee.
    • Must explain nominator's connection to nominee and disciplinary qualifications for assessing the nominee's scholarship or creative work. Bulk of the letter must provide evidence of current recognition and impact of nominee's work and the promise for field-defining impact in the future. 
  • External Letter of Support
    • Two-page maximum.
    • From a senior scholar in the field who is not from the nominee's dissertation committee or from their degree-granting institution.
    • Must explain their qualifications for making a determination of the nominee's caliber as a scholar/artist and provide evidence for the current recognition and impact of the nominee's work and the promise for future field-defining impact.
  • Nominee's brief CV (five-page maximum).

Note: Submission that includes additional information or exceeds page limits will be disqualified.

PDF nomination submitted via UBbox with email notifcations to facultyaffairs@buffalo.edu and one hard copy mailed/delivered to the Office of Faculty Affairs.
