This exhibition features works of art and archival material from the University at Buffalo’s collection that have travelled around the world and back again or been photographed for significant publications.
“The mission of the UB Anderson Gallery, the University at Buffalo’s museum, is education, research and maintenance of the university’s permanent collection. It provides an adventuresome and accessible environment, therefore offering a rich cultural resource to the campus, scholars, regional communities and the public.”
Collector and gallery owner David K. Anderson donated the UB Anderson Gallery building, along with over 1,200 works of art, to the University in 2000. Son of legendary New York gallerist Martha Jackson, (1907-1969), David Anderson also donated the Martha Jackson Gallery Archives (1953-1969) that provide vital provenance information, photographs, correspondence, and catalog publications from this period.
In addition to serving regional academic communities and K-12 teachers and students, the rich cultural resources at UB Anderson Gallery are regularly made accessible to museums, galleries, auction houses, art dealers, curators, scholars, and writers who travel to Buffalo from across the nation, Europe and Asia to study artwork in the collection or the Martha Jackson Gallery Archives or contact us to borrow a work of art, photograph, letter or catalog publication for an exhibition or publication. This exhibition features works of art and archival material that have travelled around the world and back again or been photographed for significant publications. Most recently, two early works by Antoni Tàpies have returned from the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain where they were included in the fall 2013 comprehensive exhibition Antoni Tàpies: From Object to Sculpture (1964-2009). In the 2008 exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Modern Masters: American Abstraction, a chapter of the exhibition catalog featured Martha Jackson Gallery. During her visit to UB Anderson Gallery, Chief Curator Virginia Mecklenburg selected several photographs from the Martha Jackson Gallery Archives, and borrowed the catalog from the Martha Jackson Gallery’s 1960 exhibition, New Forms, New Media-I. Ming Tiampo, Associate Professor, Carleton University, Ottawa, researched the Gutai group in the Martha Jackson Gallery Archives in 2009 in preparation for the exhibition Under Each Other’s Spell”: The Gutai and New York that was shown at UB Anderson Gallery. In 2013 she co-curated the groundbreaking exhibition Gutai: Splendid Playground (February 15-May 8, 2013) at the Guggenheim Museum, New York City. Founded by Yoshihara Jir? in 1954, the Gutai group was first shown in the United States in 1958 at Martha Jackson Gallery.
