An annual exhibition showcasing the work of junior-level students from the Department of Visual Studies as they compete for the yearly Rumsey Scholarship. Alissa Bailey, the 2013 winner, headlines this year’s exhibition. Other participants competing for the 2014 Rumsey Scholarship are: Neaha Aamir, Hannah Belotte, Alicia Grunder, Austin Laughlin, Harumo Sato, and Amber Sliter. The exhibition opens with a public reception in the Visual Studies Gallery on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 5 to 7pm. The artists will be in attendance.
The Rumsey Scholarship funds travel and study during the summer between the recipient’s junior and senior year. The recipient is selected based on the quality of the exhibited work and a written proposal describing how the award will be used; the decision is made by the entire Visual Studies faculty. The award recipient(s) will produce work for an exhibition in Fall 2014.
Evelyn Rumsey, the scholarship’s namesake, was born into a prominent Buffalo family. Her brother, Charles Cary Rumsey, was a well-known sculptor, some of whose work has been restored by the Casting Institute. Evelyn was a student of Robert Henri and Charles Hawthorne, and one of her works was exhibited in the New York Armory Show of 1913. According to one critic, “Her most significant work, the early impressionist paintings, establishes her as one of a select group of early 20th-century American Impressionist painters.”
