John Hultberg (1922-2005) is best known for his dramatic, often dark landscapes and interiors scattered with recognizable imagery and marked by his innovative use of perspective. His paintings and prints take viewers through a vortex, visiting compartmentalized apocalyptic and alien lands (often inhabited by demons or otherworldly beings), where occasional uncluttered expanses create windows into the unknown. The exhibition consists of paintings and graphic works from the university’s permanent collection.
John Hultberg received a BA in literature from Fresno State College, CA, and served as Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. Following his discharge from the Navy, he studied painting at the San Francisco School of Fine Art (now the San Francisco Art Institute). During a short stay in Paris in 1954, he met New York City art dealer Martha Jackson who, along with her son, David K. Anderson, would collectively represent him from 1954 to 1980.
