Joe Sacco draws the world in tension, forcing humor, compassion, and ambiguity to collide. Framing his journalistic comics in terms as culturally sophisticated as his graphic line work is bold, Sacco allows contemporary political, aesthetic and critical issues to subtly inform stories set in realms as unexpected as Israel’s occupied territories and Bosnia’s war ravaged cities. To engage this survey of Sacco’s comics in a gallery context is to participate, wittingly or not, in a critical dialogue on art and media culture at the millennial turn.
