In this exhibition, Mr. Dob continues Murakami’s interest in playing with the signifying conditions of contemporary Japanese culture caught between tradition and a Western cultural postmodernism wrought through technology and consumerism. If consumer culture aims to simultaneously invent and satisfy needs, and if contemporary art that engages mass culture seeks an understanding of those signifying conditions, Mr. Dob, with Murakami’s characteristic ambivalence, happily serves both.
