Group calls for ‘internationalizing’ UB

Technology aims to detect terrorists.

UB computer and behavioral scientists are developing automated systems that track faces, voices, bodies and other biometrics against scientifically tested behavioral indicators in an effort to detect individuals who may be about to commit a terrorist act. » Full Story

Smoking linked to severity of MS. Persons with multiple sclerosis who smoke risk increasing the amount of brain tissue shrinkage, a consequence of MS, and the subsequent severity of their disease, new research conducted at UB's Buffalo Neuroimaging Analysis Center has shown.

Gauging knowledge of substance use. New research results from UB's Research Institute on Addictions suggest that most parents are aware of and accurately evaluate the extent of their teenager's cigarette smoking, marijuana use, drinking and overall substance use.

NYSTAR grant recruits nanotech expert. The university has received a $750,000 grant from the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR) to recruit Gottfried Strasser, an internationally known scientist in nanotechnology.

Involving dads in ADHD treatment. UB researcher Greg Fabiano has developed a new treatment program for ADHD that features a sports element designed to improve fathers' participation in their children's treatment program.

Raising money for scholarships. UB will host its second Scholarship Gala on Nov. 10 to raise funds for undergraduate and graduate student scholarships.

NIH funds drug search. UB biochemist Daniel Kosman has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a drug aimed at an iron-based neurodegenerative disease called aceruloplasminemia.

Hass to give Silverman reading. Former U.S. poet laureate Robert Hass will deliver the annual Oscar Silverman Poetry Reading on Nov. 9.

Nurses describe dedication, frustration. A paper authored by UB faculty member Suzanne Dickerson analyzes nurses' responses to a survey assessing their work satisfaction.

Brief looks at parks funding. The Regional Institute's latest Policy Brief examines Erie County's complex parks history and its current struggles to provide adequate support for its assets.

Downtown wins in survey of campuses. UB's growing downtown campus scored highest in an informal survey yesterday of how members of two Faculty Senate committees view the trio of UB campuses.
