UB to hold 162nd commencement

Camp set for top Buffalo students

The university will conduct a mathematics and science summer camp in August for 50 high-achieving eighth graders in the Buffalo Public Schools, funded through a grant from the state education department’s Excelsior Scholars Program. » Full Story

Summer lecture series set. UB’s internationally renowned faculty will share their expertise on a variety of topics during the annual UBThisSummer Lecture Series.

Transforming architecture. A unique model of pedagogy established by the School of Architecture and Planning is graduating experts in domains that are revolutionizing the field of architecture.

Possible MS treatment. Plant sterols, known to help reduce high cholesterol, also may be effective in treating the symptoms of multiple sclerosis, research by UB investigators has shown.

Conference champs. The UB women’s tennis team claimed the university’s first-ever Mid-American Conference title on Sunday with a 4-3 victory over Western Michigan.

Lowering the cost of dentures. UB faculty member Hyeongil Kim is working on several projects that aim to lower the cost of dentures and dental implants for patients.

People are key to WNY revival. Policy-makers in New York state need to concentrate less on “things” and more on people if they really want to revitalize the economy of Buffalo and Western New York, President John B. Simpson told members of the Professional Staff Senate.

Salute to UB authors. UB will recognize more than 70 faculty and staff authors, as well as authors from Roswell Park Cancer Institute, at a reception today.

Gender influences MS’ effect on brain. A new study by UB neurologists has shown that in addition to affecting women two-to-three times more than men, multiple sclerosis damages different regions of the brain in men and women.

UB Law alumni to be recognized. The UB Law School will honor five graduates and Interim Dean Makau Mutua with Distinguished Alumni Awards today at its 46th annual UB Law Alumni Association meeting and dinner.

Drop/add revisions spark concern. Representatives from the undergraduate Student Association voiced concern during yesterday’s meeting of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee about a proposal to revise UB’s drop/add policy.

Survey seeks your input. In an effort to improve internal communications at UB, the Office of University Communications has created an online survey to solicit feedback from faculty and staff.
