Forum to focus on campus concepts

UB faculty, staff and students, as well as members of the community, will have an opportunity to provide feedback on specific concepts for future development of the university’s North, South and Downtown campuses at a day-long forum to be held on Tuesday. » Full Story

UB establishes Jewish institute

UB has established the Institute for Jewish Thought, Heritage and Culture, a multidisciplinary research and academic degree-granting center that will focus scholarship on the critical role that Judaism has played in the development and communication of Western thought. » Full Story

Behind Attica’s walls. “Encountering Attica,” a documentary film that chronicles meetings between UB law students and inmates from Attica Correctional Facility, is upsetting stereotypes and changing perspectives.

Recognized by Research Foundation. Four UB faculty members were among 20 of their colleagues from SUNY campuses across the state who were honored for their research and scholarship at the SUNY Research Foundation’s annual awards dinner.

Playing role in budget negotiations. Tax revenue forecasts by UB economist Isaac Ehrlich and researchers in the Center of Excellence on Human Capital, Technology Transfer, and Economic Growth and Development may play a major role in future budget negotiations in determining how much New York state has to spend.

We’re all stars now. A new study of television viewing and communication patterns among young adults by UB researchers has found a relationship between reality television viewing and “promiscuous friending” on popular social networking sites such as Facebook.

Licensing UB technology. Local company Medcotek Inc. has signed a licensing agreement with UB for use of a new technology that will advance the company’s entry into the lucrative teleradiology market.

Mysteries of accruals accounting. During 30 years in academia, UB faculty member William Kross has taken a hard look at some of the tough questions facing the field of accountancy, including why accounting numbers are no longer a strong indicator of corporate stock prices.

New humanities fellows. Twelve faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences have been named Humanities Institute research fellows for the 2008-09 academic year.

Source of bad breath. Oral biologists at UB have confirmed that a bacterium known as Solobacterium moorei is directly associated with chronic bad breath.

Honors College discussed. The changes that have taken place in the UB Honors Program since its expansion to college status in October were among the topics of conversation during yesterday’s meeting of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.
