600 attend ‘Building UB’ forum

About 600 members of the UB and local communities turned out Tuesday for the first of four public forums on "Building UB," the comprehensive physical planning process being developed by UB in conjunction with its plans to grow by 40 percent by the year 2020. » Full Story

Three UB faculty members and one former faculty member have been named SUNY Distinguished Professors—the highest faculty rank in the SUNY system—by the SUNY Board of Trustees. » Full Story

Red dots raise campus awareness. A UB student is using a "red-dot" campaign to raise awareness of the prevalence of genital herpes among college students.

Gift funds Hopkins chair. Inspired by the work of pioneering UB neurosurgeon L. Nelson "Nick" Hopkins III, the chairman emeritus of Merrill Lynch and Co. has made a gift of $1.5 million to UB to establish an endowed fund to name a neurosurgery chair in Hopkins' honor.

The hunt for bat flies and fleas. UB biologist Katharina de la Cruz rappels into caves in remote jungles around the world to collect bat flies and fleas.

Work leads to dismissal of case. Barbara Nevergold's campaign to clear a Buffalonian charged in the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot will end in a Tulsa courtroom next week when the case is dismissed.

Gift honors Greiner. The retired CEO of Starbucks Corp. has made a tribute gift of $200,000 in honor of his mentor, former UB president and current law professor William R. Greiner.

Looking for brain center for tinnitus. UB researchers have received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the brain signals responsible for creating the ringing in the ears that can range from annoying to debilitating.

Goal is more organ donors. A UB study aims at increasing the number of African-American, Hispanic and Asian registered organ donors in New York City.
