UB to hold humanities conference

The second annual national humanities conference presented by the UB Humanities Institute will explore the way in which the humanities emerged, the consequence of their foundation and their uses and implications within the West and its global neighbors. » Full Story

Working toward terahertz detectors

UB researchers and their collaborators at other institutions have received a $1.2 million National Science Foundation grant to develop semiconductor-based terahertz detectors that can be integrated seamlessly with conventional electronics. » Full Story

Filling fragments can be crime solvers. UB dental forensic researchers have shown that evidence exists that can help identify human remains when all else—flesh, bones, teeth, DNA— is lost.

Mini-med school narrows focus. The popular series presented by the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences this fall will examine the prevention and treatment of heart disease, a major cause of death in Western New York.

The vision of Uncrowned Queens. If not for the work of Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Barbara Seals Nevergold, the accomplishments of many African-American women might have been lost forever.

Uncrowned Queens to hit the airwaves. The Uncrowned Queens project has received a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to prepare radio programs chronicling the lives of African-American women.

Concerns voiced about Turnitin. The chair of the Faculty Senate Computer Services Committee yesterday presented several "issues of concern" to the senate's executive committee regarding UB faculty members' use of Turnitin, a plagiarism-detection service.

Online resource expands. Health and human services data is now available on the Regional Knowledge Network, the Web-based information resource developed by UB's Institute for Local Governance and Regional Growth.

Kim Jones retrospective. A retrospective of the work of artist Kim Jones will open Oct. 19 in the first-floor, Lightwell and second-floor galleries of the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

German films to be screened. The Graduate Group for German and Austrian Studies will screen two gems of East German cinema on Monday as part of the national tour titled "Rebels Without a Cause: The Cinema of East Germany."
