UB hopes to bring Amherst to the planning table

While UB continues to work closely with the Town of Amherst to plan for the development of land along its campus edge, SUNY, on behalf of UB, yesterday filed a lawsuit seeking to annul action by the Amherst Town Board and the town's Zoning Board of Appeals to rezone a 22-acre site on Rensch Road for an apartment complex for college students, a use that would be contrary to the town's own master plan. » Full Story

UB ramps up scholarship effort

While UB has had some success in students winning nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships, the university is increasing its efforts to ensure that more students apply for—and win—these awards. » Full Story

Celebrating unique program in Cuba. President John B. Simpson will lead a UB delegation that will travel to Havana, Cuba, next month to attend ceremonies marking the fourth graduation of the Master's of Humanities Program in Caribbean Cultural Studies jointly operated by UB and the University of Havana.

Tending to the trees. Tree trimming, planting and cutting has begun on both campuses in an effort to restore and replace trees damaged in last October’s storm.

Overcoming obstacles. UB researcher Dalian Ding has gone from laboring as a peasant farmer in China during the Cultural Revolution to a career as one of the world's top inner-ear anatomists and a prolific scholar.

Administrative changes in pharmacy. The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has named Gene D. Morse as associate dean of clinical and translational research and Edward M. Bednarczyk to succeed Morse as chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice.

Balkans' breakup sparks career path. Growing up in Greece in the 1980s and '90s, UB faculty member Vasiliki Neofotistos says the urge to learn more about the breakup of the Balkans was the first step on a career path in political anthropology.

Business Partners Day set. Assemblywoman Crystal D. Peoples and Lockheed Martin will be honored at UB's Business Partners Day luncheon to be held on June 14.

Chrisphonte chooses to participate. UB law student Jenna Chrisphonte has acquired an impressive record of accomplishments during her career at UB.

Gift supports new building. UB Engineering graduate Gina Bronkie Hammond has given a gift of $150,000 in support of a new high-tech engineering building.

Building a case for space. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to make submissions to Framing UB, a campus-wide dialogue—in photos and videos—about UB's North, South and downtown campuses.

Engineering degree available online. The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences will offer its first fully online master's degree program through its distance-learning network, EngiNet, starting in the fall 2007 semester.
