Students offer help with taxes, credits

UB law and management students are helping low-income residents do their taxes and apply for tax credits that can provide a needed boost in annual income. » Full Story

An international pharmaceutical consulting company has relocated an office to the region to establish partnerships with UB and benefit from the region's biotech assets. » Full Story

Improving muscles' performance. Swimmers and scuba divers can improve their swimming endurance and breathing capacity through targeted training of the respiratory muscles, UB researchers have shown.

Exploring distant frontiers. Geology faculty member Beata Csatho's impulse to travel to faraway lands dovetails nicely with her academic interest in remote sensing.

Women's film festival opens tonight. "Connections," the 11th annual Women's Film Festival presented by the Gender Institute, offers features and documentaries from Buffalo to Bosnia that portray women's experiences in the world.

Testing no-pain dental work. UB dental researchers are testing two methods to repair decayed teeth painlessly, without drilling or administering shots of anesthesia.

"Joyce with Gusto." The UB Humanities Institute, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and riverrun Inc. will team up to present an elegant program in February about lesser-known aspects of Buffalo's most celebrated adopted son, James Joyce.

Gauging global warming. UB paleoclimatologists are looking deep into the mud in the Canadian Arctic in an effort to reconstruct past climates and gauge the progress of global warming.

February concerts. The Department of Music will present a variety of musical offerings during February, including an amazing partnership involving violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and guitarists Sergio and Odar Assad.

Focusing on public employment. The Buffalo metro economy is slightly more reliant on public-sector employment than that of the United States, but less dependent than New York State as a whole, according to the latest Regional Institute Policy Brief focusing on "The Public Sector in WNY."

Gift advances pharmaceutical sciences. Schering-Plough has provided $125,000 to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to fund the training of a graduate fellow in the school's pharmaceutics program.

Mission Review II nears completion. UB hopes to submit its Mission Review II proposal to SUNY next month, members of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee were told at yesterday's meeting.
