Simpson to return to Asia

President John B. Simpson has been selected to accompany Margaret Spellings, U.S. secretary of education, and other federal officials on a nine-day trip to Asia to meet with academic, government and business leaders in China, Japan and Korea. » Full Story

State funding concludes campaign. A $1 million major legislative initiative from state Sen. Dale M. Volker has allowed the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to successfully complete its $9 million campaign for the Ira G. Ross Eye Institute.

Seismic testing making headlines. The final NEESWood seismic test to be conducted on Tuesday at UB is attracting much national and international attention.

University Club fosters collegiality. The University Club is promoting collaboration and collegiality among UB faculty and staff.

Research target viruses. Researchers at CUBRC and UB's New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences are developing radically new drugs designed to cure viruses ranging from the deadly Ebola virus to the common cold, thanks to a major $8.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense.

Tackling hot-button issues. UB sociologist Elaine Howard Ecklund isn't afraid to take on such controversial issues as race, religion and immigration to dispel the myths that surround them.

Women still victims of sexism. English professor Carine Mardorossian will discuss her work and the "second wave" of feminism during a lecture sponsored by the Gender Institute.

Authority on GIS to speak at UB. Former UB faculty member Michael Batty, one of the world's leading authorities on geographic information systems, will speak at UB on Wednesday as the 2006 Will and Nan Clarkson Visiting Chair in Planning in the School of Architecture and Planning.

Faculty Senate spotlight on Social Work. School of Social Work Dean Nancy Smyth told the Faculty Senate on Tuesday about the school's ambitious plan to increase its national ranking, as well as the number of full-time faculty and students.
