Nanostructures group advocates collaboration, new hires

Collaboration among scientists, the free exchange of information, new faculty hires and a formal administrative infrastructure dedicated to facilitating such collaborations are the essential ingredients needed to leverage UB's proposed strategic strength in Integrated Nanostructured Systems, according to the group's white paper. » Full Story

Rational tuition policy advocated.

Numerous witnesses at a legislative hearing on Monday appealed for the adoption of a rational tuition policy for SUNY, saying it would benefit both students and the university. » Full Story

Smoking impairs male fertility. Men who smoke cigarettes may experience a significant decline in their capacity to father a child, UB research has shown.

UB to hold humanities conference. Some of the most exceptional scholars and researchers addressing humanities issues today will attend the first annual conference sponsored by the UB Humanities Institute.

CIRRIE wins renewal grant. The Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information and Exchange has received a $2.5 million, five-year competitive renewal grant from the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

HEARD about it? UB's new faculty ensemble focuses on expanding local audiences for contemporary music and helping to recruit performance-oriented students.

Ontology conference set. The National Center for Ontological Research at UB will present its inaugural conference today featuring participants from academic and industrial institutions from several nations involved in informatics and ontological development.

Course evaluation software released. A local software-development company has released the latest edition of a Web-based course evaluation tool that was tested with the College of Arts and Sciences.

No dramatic change in tenure denials. The number of persons denied tenure annually at UB has not changed dramatically since President John B. Simpson took office nearly 22 months ago, the vice provost for faculty affairs told the Faculty Senate Executive Committee yesterday.

Powell lectures on world politics. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, speaking at UB as part of the Distinguished Speakers Series, said the U.S. could have done more after initial combat operations ended in Iraq to prevent the uprising now plaguing the country.
