Strategic investments begin

UB is moving ahead with implementation of the Integrated Nanostructured Systems strategic strength proposal, the first of many collaborative plans to come to invest in strategic strengths identified in the UB 2020 planning process. » Full Story

Newman to receive Norton Medal

Reginald B. Newman II, chairman and former president of NOCO Energy Corp., and longtime friend and supporter of UB, will receive the Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal, UB's highest award, during the university's 160th general commencement ceremony. » Full Story

Seed funding awarded. Seven research teams have been awarded funding through new programs created last fall to encourage and enable increased research and scholarly activity among UB faculty and staff.

Simpson thanks faculty. President John B. Simpson was on hand at Tuesday's Faculty Senate meeting to thank senators for "another wonderful year" of teaching and mentoring UB students.

Yerkey calls it a career. After 29 years at UB as a professor and pioneer in the application of new technologies to the field of information and library studies, Neil Yerkey is calling it a career.

Handling a medical crisis. With a cool head and a UB education, nursing student Michelle Henry recently took the lead in handling an airborne medical emergency.

Five receive Plesur awards. Five faculty members and lecturers have received Milton Plesur Excellence in Teaching Awards from the Student Association for their commitment to students and the quality of their teaching.

"Moralistic" standards for sex. A UB researcher examining a program in which social workers served as feminist mentors to a group of middle-school girls found that the mentors were sending the girls mixed messages regarding the "ideal girl."

Client violence focus of workshop. The School of Social Work will present a workshop geared toward helping social workers minimize the risk of client violence.

Planning, growth key to success. President John B. Simpson, speaking at a recent meeting of the Professional Staff Senate, said that strategic planning and growth are the means to UB being recognized as one of the nation's premier public research institutions.

Grant to expand RKN. The John R. Oishei Foundation has awarded UB's Institute for Local Governance and Regional Growth $336,371 to develop phase two of the recently launched Regional Knowledge Network.

Censorship alert. In light of recent developments in laws and attitudes regarding censorship, the UB Humanities Institute and the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library have teamed up to speak directly to the public about the meaning and consequences of these profound changes.
