UB to undertake obesity study

BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York and the School of Public Health and Health Professions Tuesday announced a five-year research-and-treatment program for the severely obese that will study the effects of weight-loss alternatives to gastric bypass surgery. » Full Story

New division joins EOC, MFC. UB has created a Division of Continuing and Professional Studies within the Office of the Provost to expand the range of academic and workforce development programs offered to members of the Western New York community.

Naples at risk. UB geologist Michael Sheridan says new geological and archaeological evidence indicates that Mt. Vesuvius' next eruption may put metropolitan Naples at risk.

UB top green partner. The Environmental Protection Agency has named UB one of its Top 10 College and University Green Power Partners in recognition of the university's wind-power purchases.

Committed to women and work. UB faculty member Ruth Meyerowitz brings to life the struggles women face in the workplace.

Native storyteller to open series. Stories of the Americas, a performance and speaker series presented by the American Studies Graduate Student Association, will debut later this month with several presentations by Native American storyteller Ishmael Hope.

Working to improve APRs. The Division of Athletics is working harder to provide academic support to UB football players after the program lost three scholarships for 2006-07 due to the team's poor academic performance in the NCAA's recent Academic Progress Rate report.

Course-resignation date extended. The Faculty Senate adopted a proposal Tuesday that allows students to unilaterally resign from a course without penalty through the 11th week of the fall or spring semester, and through the first two-thirds of any other academic term.

"Elemental House" showcases designs. A shoulder-to-shoulder crowd streamed into the UB Anderson Gallery on Friday evening for the opening reception for "Elemental House," an exhibit of work by UB architecture students.
