Pelham agrees with warning

UB faculty member William E. Pelham Jr., an expert on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, says he agrees with a recent Federal Drug Administration panel recommendation that Ritalin and other stimulant drugs used to treat ADHD carry a warning about a possible link to an increased risk of death and injury. » Full Story

UB using biodiesel in vehicles

The university has begun a pilot project in which a biodiesel blend—a nontoxic, alternative fuel made from vegetable oil—is being used in nonessential diesel vehicles. » Full Story

A special honor. Sociologist Mark Gottdiener is being recognized by his peers during a special session devoted to his work being held as part of the Eastern Sociological Society's annual meeting.

Law auction tonight. The Buffalo Public Interest Law Program will host its annual auction tonight to provide scholarships so UB law students can accept unpaid public interest summer positions.

Fingerprint advances fight cybercrime. Biometrics researchers at UB have made important advances that bring closer the day when we can access devices and Web sites with nothing more than the touch of a fingertip.

Changes in China. Anthropologist Everett Zhang is working on several projects that examine the much-heralded changes Chinese society has undergone recently, and the effect those dramatic changes are having on the population.

Virtual TMJ. In an unusual collaboration, a professor in the School of Dental Medicine has joined forces with faculty members in the School of Architecture and Planning to develop a high-tech teaching tool to assist in the education of dental students and patients.

Bridging Buffalo. An exhibit of photographs taken by UB faculty member Bruce Jackson of bridges throughout Buffalo opened yesterday in the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.

Social Work history project. In preparation for its 75th anniversary, the School of Social Work has kicked off an effort to document the school's history of educating social work professionals and its impact on countless lives.

Organ music takes the stage. The spotlight will be on organ music next month at UB, as two renowned performers will appear in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

Decanal review. The performance of deans at UB will be reviewed every five years, enabling the administration to review three deans per year, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee was told yesterday.
