SIGNING OFF. UB President John B. Simpson signs his name to the beam that was raised to the top of the Buffalo Life Sciences Complex, under construction at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, during a ceremony on Friday. The complex, at Virginia and Ellicott streets near downtown Buffalo, will house Roswell Park Cancer Institute's Center for Genetics and Pharmacology and the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. Universal design home to be part of Horizon Home Show

Large abdomen cuts lung function. Research conducted by UB scientists has found that men in their study with the most abdominal fat experienced a 15.5 percent decrease in pulmonary function compared with men with the least fat.

Targeting hearing loss. UB hearing researchers have received two NIH grants that will focus on diagnosing damage to a special group of sensory cells in the ear and determining whether a new drug can protect the inner ear against hearing loss.
