Very-low-fat diet fails to improve heart health

In findings counter to current beliefs, a UB study shows that a diet very low in fat does not lower the risk factors for heart disease in healthy sedentary individuals and, in fact, may increase them. » Full Story

Pepsi campus. Campus Dining & Shops/FSA has entered into a five-year, exclusive-vendor agreement with Pepsi to provide soft drink products for UB.

Virtual exhibits. The UB Libraries offer a virtual smorgasbord of art, pop culture and history via digital exhibits.

Weight gain increases cancer risk. UB epidemiologists have found a strong link between weight gain and risk of postmenopausal breast cancer for women who put on the most pounds between their first pregnancy and menopause, compared to those who gained the least.

Warrior poet. UB faculty member Alexis DeVeaux spent 10 years researching and writing the long-awaited biography of feminist poet Audre Lorde.

Fabulous fluting. Flute performers and educators from around the world will be at UB next month for "Pantasmagoria," a series of master classes, workshops and concerts aimed at exploring the changing world of contemporary classical flute playing.

Finding a foothold for Tibetan law. UB legal anthropologist Rebecca French is working to build an academic foundation for the study of Buddhist law and how it can inform the legal traditions of the West and the rest of the world.

Smoking status studied. UB researchers have found that smoking status does not affect the strong link between gum disease and risk of heart attack in those under 55.

Stellar year for Dyson. It's been quite a year for UB classicist Stephen Dyson, who's published two books and received a major grant from the NEH to fund a summer seminar for college teachers in Rome.

Rare posters on exhibit. Three rare posters from the 1969 premiere of HPSCHD, a groundbreaking multimedia event staged by distinguished composer John Cage and computer music pioneer Lejaren Hiller are on display in the UB Music Library.

Predicting successful VBAC. UB epidemiologists have identified factors that can predict when low-risk women can have a successful vaginal birth after a cesarean delivery.

Fights, vandalism linked to drinking at school. Interpersonal aggression and vandalism in high school are directly related to alcohol use during school hours, according to researchers at UB's Research Institute on Addictions and Canisius College.

Boeing could suffer in subsidy war. UB geographer David Pritchard predicts that Boeing could be harmed more than its rival Airbus in a subsidy war.
