Three emerge as provost finalists

Enrollment update. International applications for Fall 2004 are down dramatically from last year, while the number of applications from incoming freshmen and transfer students are up significantly, President John B. Simpson reported at Monday's meeting of the UB Council.

Colonoscopies advised. The latest study from the Women's Health Initiative on the relationship of hormone replacement and colon cancer advises women over 50 to get a routine colonoscopy, whether or not they're taking hormone therapy after menopause.

TV stars. Two members of a UB research team that is developing the first interactive, computational tool kit designed to examine the behavior of ancient beasts had a chance recently to explore the entertainment value of their work for the Discovery Channel's new "Animal Face-Off" series.

Revolutionizing purification process. With the turn of a screw, a team of UB engineers and scientists has invented a pump to be used in a device that may help transform the decontamination and purification of water, juices and other liquids.

Productive pharmacy faculty. The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences ranks fourth in the U.S. in National Institutes of Health research funding per Ph.D. faculty member, according to the latest report from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP).

Statistical alternative. UB sociologists hope to make the Summer Institute in Advanced Statistics and Methods an East Coast alternative to a program at the University of Michigan for faculty members and graduate students interested in learning the latest techniques in statistical analysis.

Who owns culture? Hector Feliciano, who spent more than seven years tracking down the story of Nazi art pillaging, will give the keynote address at a conference that will explore the legal and social issues confronted by museums and libraries in their handling of cultural heritage.

Previte to perform April 1. UB alumnus and multi-faceted jazzman Bobby Previte will return to his alma mater to perform a free concert.

Family treatment effective. UB social workers have found that a family-treatment approach is effective in reducing the risk of children falling into the same negative patterns as their substance-abusing parents.

Cronin survey. An exhibition offering a 10-year survey of the work of contemporary artist Patricia Cronin will open tomorrow with a free lecture by the curator of the Guggenheim Museum.

Fame may doom brand. Martha Stewart's high-profile retailing formula may be her brand's death sentence, according to a UB marketing expert.

Emotional savvy key. Emotional intelligence is proving to be the deciding factor in who will win the dream job with Donald Trump on the hit NBC show "The Apprentice," a UB leadership expert says.
