King Commemoration to address affirmative action

UB's transgenic butterflies. Biologists have inserted into an African butterfly a marker gene from a jellyfish, producing the first butterflies that express DNA from another species.

Bissell renovations nearly complete. Renovations to the home of University Police will provide female officers with an expanded locker room and their own private bathroom and shower facilities.

Viget lingua Latina apud UB. Latin is thriving at UB, thanks to a group dedicated to learning and speaking the ancient language.

Figuring fire response times. UB geographers have developed the first software that determines how long it takes for fire companies to respond to emergency situations in order to assess how well a city is being served by the quantity and distribution of its firefighting resources.

Clarkson lecture. Michael Kwartler, an expert in the development and use of visualization tools to present a range of potential land-use solutions, will deliver the 2004 Clarkson Lecture on March 24.

Attracting girls to science and technology. Sixty Buffalo middle school girls will venture onto the UB campus on March 27 as part of a program designed to boost the representation of women in science and technology by focusing on girls in middle school.

Singing in Slee. The New York Virtuoso Singers, considered to be one of this country's leading exponents of contemporary choral music, will perform the fifth concert in the Slee/Visiting Artist Series at UB on March 30.

Promising antifungal agent. Searching for better treatments for oral infections that plague persons with compromised immune systems, UB researchers have developed a novel peptide that appears to be a good candidate for treating candidiasis and other fungal conditions.

Experience counts in altering bias. Experience proves to be more effective than classroom learning in dispelling age bias among dental students, results of a UB program have found.

"Cocktail" protects new peptide. The anti-microbial activity of promising peptides shown in laboratory studies to kill several medically important fungi can be enhanced further by protecting the peptides from enzymes programmed to destroy them, UB oral biologists have found.

Supply meets demand. Despite ongoing concerns about the "classroom crunch," Sean Sullivan, vice provost for enrollment and planning, told members of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee yesterday that classroom supply meets the demand.
