Basketball

Men's

UB 66, Miami (Ohio) 61
Ohio University 86, UB 76
Toledo 78, UB 66

UB, which has lost numerous close games in the MAC and three overtime games this season, finally got over the hump on Saturday night against Miami University.

The Bulls got a key steal at the end of regulation and then outscored Miami 13-8 in overtime to post a 66-61 victory before 2,109 fans in Alumni Arena. The win improved UB to 4-21 overall and 2-14 in the conference.

Earlier in the week, the Bulls again found themselves in position to play David in a MAC road game. In the end, however, Goliath Ohio University had too much firepower, handing UB an 86-76 loss before 6,340 patrons in The Convo in Athens.

UB lost despite shooting 52 percent, its second-best figure of the season on the road, and forcing 17 Ohio turnovers.

UB opened the week in Alumni Arena with a 78-66 loss to the Toledo Rockets.

Women's UB 76, Bowling Green 66
UB 86, Ohio 83

Senior Mari McClure had 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Bulls to a 76-66 win over Bowling Green in Alumni Arena on Saturday. The win improves UB's record to 19-7 overall and 10-5 in the MAC.

In other action last week, Tiffany Bell (29 points, 11 rebounds) and Sonia Ortega (17 points, 10 assists) posted double-doubles to lead the Bulls to a double overtime victory over visiting Ohio, 86-83, on Feb. 21.

Earlier in the week, McClure was named to the Verizon Academic All-District I Women's Basketball Team, as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

 
Athletes of the Week

Kamau Halim of the men's track-and-field team won his second overall and first Mid-American Conference indoor title, taking the triple jump with a Central Michigan fieldhouse record leap of 50-3.25 (15.32m).

Jason Robinson of the men's basketball team scored 19 points to lead the Bulls to a 66-61 overtime win over Miami.

Sarah Fletcher of the women's track-and-field team won her second straight 20-lb. weight throw title at the MAC Championships with a school record toss of 59-1.5 (18.02m), breaking the school record of 58-6.5 (17.84m) she set last week.

Mari McClure of the women's basketball team averaged 24.5 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists in two wins and hit 53.6 percent of her shots from the floor (15-of-28) and 88.9 percent of her shots from the foul line (16-of-18). She also was named to the Verizon Academic All-District I Women's Basketball Team.

Wrestling

UB 21, Cornell 19

UB won its final regular-season dual match, defeating Cornell University on Feb. 20 in Alumni Arena. The Bulls won the first five matches, dropping the last five to the Big Red, for a 21-19 victory.

Senior Josh States lost his match by fall (5:25), ending his 17-match winning streak.

Swimming

Women's

The Bulls finished sixth out of nine teams with 282 points at the MAC Championships held last weekend in Alumni Arena Natatorium.

Ohio University won its second consecutive MAC title with 702 points.

Although the Bulls did not win any of the 20 events at the meet, UB did have several strong performances. Junior Carrie Quinlan earned first-team, All-MAC honors, while freshman Heather Rochette earned second-team nods.

Quinlan set a school record in the 100 butterfly preliminaries in 56.27 and took third in the finals in 56.50. Quinlan also teamed with Carrie Armstrong, Tracy Cotter and Abby Delia to establish a new record of 1:36.49 in the 200 free relay. Quinlan also was fourth in the 50 freestyle in 24.03. Rochette set the school record in the 200 butterfly in the preliminary round with a time of 2:06.33. She placed seventh in the finals in 2:06.73.

Men's

The Bulls finished eight among 32 scoring teams at the ECAC Championships in Sewell, N.J. UB scored a total of 186 points, while Maryland-Baltimore County won the team competition with 617 points.

UB senior Jason McLachlan took a pair of fourth-place finishes. In the 500 freestyle, he clocked a 4:37.98 after posting a 4:38.60 in the preliminaries. He followed with a 4:04.46 showing in the 400 individual medley.

Senior Josh Pun won the consolation final of the 100 butterfly in 51.82, while Dexter Tatum was 11th in 52.12. In the 200 butterfly, Tatum was fifth in 1:55.02, while Pun was sixth in 1:55.24. Eric Stimson took fourth in the 100 backstroke in 51.62.

The Bulls' 400 medley relay squad placed sixth in 3:32.22.

Indoor Track

The men's indoor track squads took seventh place among 11 teams at the MAC Championships held in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., while the women's team placed eighth among 12 teams.

Sarah Fletcher won her third MAC title, winning the 20-lb. weight throw for the second consecutive season. Fletcher's toss of 58-6.5 (17.84m) established a new UB record-besting the one she had set the previous week-and once again provisionally qualified her for NCAA Championship competition.

Other top athletes in the meet included Mike Commisso, who took second in the 800 meters in 1:52.82, and Christina Keck, who placed fifth in the women's 800 meters in 2:15.06. Biaunca McFarland was fourth in the women's triple jump at 39-10.5 (12.15m). Chrissie Matthews tied for fourth in the women's high jump at 5-6 (1.68m). Noah Burroughs finished fourth in the long jump at 23-1.25 (7.04m). Halim was seventh in the event at 22-5 (6.83m).
