New York City admissions office to aid student recruitment effort

send this article to a friend UB has opened an admissions office in New York City to aid the university's student-recruitment effort in the metro New York area. The office, located at 125 Park Ave. South in Manhattan across from Grand Central Station, will provide an overall presence for the university in the area, serving UB's alumni and development efforts, as well as admissions.

The office will serve as the coordinating venue for UB's outreach activities to prospective undergraduate students, their parents and counselors at high schools, community agencies and colleges in the metro New York region.

It is the latest in a series of initiatives by the university to increase the number of undergraduate applications it receives. Other efforts in the proactive strategy include telecounseling and the use of software packages that better track contacts with students and refine those contacts to students who are most likely to attend the university.

The new office will make it easier for prospective students and their parents to visit with a UB representative at a site near their home.

It will help cement the relationships between New York metro-area counselors and the UB admissions staff through increased opportunities to participate in professional organizations and enhanced participation in recruitment events sponsored by area schools and organizations, says Regina Toomey, director of admissions.

Having a presence in New York City will provide an opportunity to offer "more personalized attention" directly to prospective students and their families, Toomey says. They can stop in the office, talk to an admissions counselor, ask questions, pick up literature about the university and "get to know us a little bit better."

"For prospective metro New York students and their families, the University at Buffalo is very accessible by plane, train, bus and auto," Toomey points out. "We hope to be able to provide enough service through our local (New York) office to encourage students to travel to Western New York to check us out in person."

The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The telephone number is (212) 808-8116; fax number is (212) 808-8115.
