More computers in the libraries
Check out the expanded computing facilities now available at three UB libraries. Over 150 new workstations were installed over the summer at Lockwood, the Science and Engineering, and Undergraduate libraries. The workstations will provide access to the University Libraries' Web-based resources, the Internet, electronic mail, and a variety of productivity software including Microsoft Office, WordPerfect, SPSS, Maple and Matlab.

The Undergraduate Library (UGL) site, located on the first floor of Capen Hall, will be open 24 hours Monday through Thursday and other extended hours Friday through Sunday to accommodate students needing to use computers and study areas late at night. Room 226 UGL will be the base of the new University Libraries Help Center, which will offer individual and group instruction in using the new workstations. See the Help Center Web site at http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/ugl/help/ for details.

Lockwood Library's site in the second-floor north reading room (near the Newspapers and Microforms Area) also will be open extended hours. Another location in the third-floor atrium area will be open during Lockwood's regular hours.

The Science and Engineering Library site is at the south end of the third floor, an area traditionally used as a group study area by students. It will remain a group study area, and computers have been arranged so students can use them for collaborative activities.

All three sites have been attractively refurbished with new furniture and carpeting, and 60 open data ports (for connecting laptops) will be added during the fall semester. They are part of an initiative between the University Libraries, CIT, University Facilities and University Services. The project aims to increase students' access to information technology and to integrate it into their regular study and research routines.

Additional information and a complete list of accessible software is on the Web at http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/sel/temp/computers.html

For assistance in connecting to the World Wide Web, contact the CIT Help Desk at 645-3542.
