on demolition of former research reactor

The former nuclear research reactor on the South Campus has not been in operation since 1994.

UB will share information about its plans to demolish the Buffalo Materials Research Center, its former nuclear research reactor, at a session at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in Allen Hall, South Campus.

The South Campus facility has not been in operation since 1994; its radioactive fuel has been completely removed. UB has received permission from federal and state authorities to take down the building that housed the reactor and return the site to a green field.

David Vasbinder, UB assistant director of environment, health and safety, will explain the project and answer questions from the public. Other university staff members and representatives from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission also will be on hand to answer any questions.

Members of the community, as well as faculty, staff, students and all other interested persons, are encouraged to attend.

Reservations are not required; no permit is needed to park in university lots after 3 p.m.

Robert Baier says:

Please note that an alternative plan is to CONVERT this irreplaceable building into a facility for Medical Device & terminal drug sterilization. An expert Consultant has deemed the current reactor building as being an "ideal site" for such re-use, growing our regional life sciences and food technology business prospects.
