  • UB’s annual security report now available

To assist all members of the UB community in providing for their own safety and security, University Police has posted the university’s annual security compliance document on its website

Crime statistics can be accessed directly via a PDF or an Excel document.

Printed copies also are available upon request by contacting University Police at Bissell Hall, Buffalo, NY, 14260, or by calling 645-2227.

Information regarding the university’s Emergency Plans and Procedures also can be accessed online.

  • Financial experts to speak at SOM

Two expert financial professionals will speak at the School of Management as part of this year’s Helen and Oscar Sufrin Lectureship in Accounting, being held Oct. 5 in the Newman Center’s new Campus Ministry Center, 495 Skinnersville Road, Amherst, near the Creekside Village housing complex.

Toby Bishop, director of the Deloitte Forensic Center, will speak at 9 a.m. on major embezzlement cases; Scott Socha, vice president-treasurer at Delaware North Companies, will speak at 10:45 a.m. on the treasury functions at privately held companies.

A Deloitte Eminence Fellow and a global thought leader in fraud detection and deterrence, Bishop has been named five times to Accounting Today’s list of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the Accounting Profession. He is co-author, with Frank Hydoski, of the book “Corporate Resiliency: Managing the Growing Risk of Fraud and Corruption” and a related article in Harvard Business Review.

Socha joined Delaware North, a global leader in hospitality and food service, in 1999. He has held a series of high-level positions in or directly related to finance, including manager of financial planning and analysis, assistant controller and vice president of finance for the company’s parks and resorts division. In his current position, he oversees the company’s worldwide cash-management activities specific to business operations, capital projects and acquisitions, and manages relationships with external capital providers throughout the world.

Although the lectures are free of charge, reservations are required by Oct. 1 and can be made by contacting Janet Kiefer at kiefer@buffalo.edu or at 645-3290.

The Sufrin Lectureship brings distinguished business professionals to the School of Management to speak about accounting issues. Funding is provided through the generous support of Leslie Sufrin and Gerald Sufrin, a longtime UB professor, in honor of their late parents.

  • Laura Bush to speak in lecture series

Former First Lady Laura Bush will speak at 8 p.m. Oct. 10 in Alumni Arena, North Campus, as part of UB’s Distinguished Speakers Series.

The wife of former president George W. Bush, Laura Bush is recognized in her own right as a champion of children’s education, human rights and health care initiatives both here and abroad, among them the “Ready to Read, Ready to Learn” initiative and global literacy programs. Her efforts have earned her honors from the United Nations, the Elie Wiesel Foundation, the Kuwait-American Foundation, Vanderbilt University, the American Library Association and many other groups.

Bush has never courted controversy and revealed little of herself to the public during her husband’s administration. Post-administration commentators and readers of her autobiographical book, “Spoken from the Heart,” however, have found that the former First Lady definitely has a mind of her own and supports a number of progressive positions, such as those on Roe v. Wade, same-sex marriage, Elena Kagan’s appointment to the Supreme Court and disagreement with Arizona’s immigration law.

Tickets for Bush’s lecture may be purchased through the Alumni Arena ticket office, visiting Ticketmaster.com or calling TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000.

Discount vouchers are available for all current and retired UB faculty and staff through TIAA-CREF, and to all members of United University Professions (UUP). Vouchers are valid only at campus ticket offices. Visit the “tickets” page on the Distinguished Speakers Series website for more information.

UB undergraduates and GSA-represented graduate students are eligible for a free ticket, while supplies last. UB undergrads may pick up a free ticket in the SA Office in 350 Student Union; GSA-represented grad students may pick up a free ticket at the SBI Ticket Office in 221 Student Union. One ticket per student; UB ID required.

  • Photos needed for Veterans Day exhibit

UB veteran and military students, faculty, staff and their supporters are invited to submit photos for the Military and Veterans Photo Project, sponsored by UB’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

These photos provide “snapshots” of UB veteran and military members’ experiences to increase awareness and understanding about military life in the UB community.

Selected photos will be mounted and displayed at UB’s Veterans Day Celebration. They later will be displayed throughout the year at various sites on campus. Photos from last year’s project still may be viewed in the glass cases on the ground floor of Capen Hall near Capen Café.

Read a story about the project in the UB Reporter.

For more information or to submit a photo, email UB-VetsOutreach@buffalo.edu. The deadline for photo submissions is Oct. 15.

  • UB Scholarship Gala set for Nov. 9

Longtime UB supporters Lois and Michael Cropp, and Sharon and Mark Hamister will serve as co-chairs for the seventh annual UB Scholarship Gala.

The event will take place from 6-11 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Edward Wright Practice Facility in Alumni Arena, North Campus.

Independent Health and Verizon are the presenting sponsors for this year’s event.

Cropp, president and CEO of Independent Health, is a UB Foundation board trustee. Hamister, chair and CEO of The Hamister Group, is a UB Foundation board director.

Attracting the best and brightest students is one of the goals of UB 2020, the university’s strategic plan to become a model 21st-century public university. Scholarships are one of the most effective ways to guarantee that top students choose UB.

To date, UB has raised more than $1 million in scholarship funds through six gala events. Donor support—by corporations, foundations and individuals—helps to ensure that every promising student has the opportunity to pursue a first-rate education at UB.

This year’s event will include dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, and student performances. Tickets are $200 per person and tables are $1,500, with sponsorships still available.

For more information, tickets or sponsorships, call 881-1708 or visit the Scholarship Gala website.
