“Health and Wellness in our Community” is the theme of this year’s UBThisSummer Lecture Series, the annual summer series of talks by prominent UB faculty members.

The lectures, which are free and open to the public, will take place at 4 p.m. on most Wednesdays, beginning June 6 and running through Aug. 1, in Agrusa Auditorium on the first floor of Davis Hall, North Campus.

There will be no lecture on July 4.

The lectures highlight how research by UB faculty and staff representing each of the eight strategic strengths of the UB 2020 strategic plan approach the theme of health and wellness in the community.

The schedule:

  • June 6: “Beauty and the Beast: From Skin Development to Disease,” Satrajit Sinha, associate professor, Department of Biochemistry. Sinha will talk about the new technology and sophisticated genetic approaches that are providing important insights into skin biology and disease.
  • June 13: Precision Diagnostics: Right Test, Right Patient, Right Time, Right Cost,” John E. Tomaszewski, professor and chair, Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences. Tomaszewski will discuss the use of lab data in predicting patient outcomes.
  • June 20: “The Medicine of Art: UB’s Arts in Healthcare Initiative,” Katherine Trapanovski, program director, and Thomas B. Burrows, executive director. Trapanovski and Burrows will talk about the Arts in Healthcare Initiative; some of the artists associated with the initiative will discuss their work in hospitals and lead audience members in a participatory activity.
  • June 27: “West Side Wellness: The Case of Diabetes Self-Management,” Linda S. Kahn, associate professor, Department of Family Medicine. Kahn will talk about her research on how refugees on Buffalo’s West Side live with diabetes.
  • July 11: “Nanomedicine: Transforming Health Care with Nanotechnology,” Paras Prasad, SUNY Distinguished Professor and executive director, Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics. Prasad will discuss the emerging field of nanomedicine—and UB’s leading role in it—as well as the concept of rejuvenation therapy.
  • July 18: “It Ain’t Civil and it Ain’t Right: Health, Wellness and Disability Rights in 20th Century United States,” Michael Rembis, associate director, Center for Disability Studies. Rembis will talk about the history of the disability-rights movement and its worldwide impact.
  • July 25: “Innovation in Health Informatics: How Human-Centered Design is the Key,” Ann Bisantz, professor, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Bisantz will show how a human-centered approach to designing critical, computer-based, health information systems will improve national health care.
  • Aug. 1: “Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,” Steven Dubovsky, professor and chair, Department of Psychiatry. Dubovsky will discuss the emotional and physical reactions, and long-term consequences, to stress—including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder and depression—and outline the methods of treatment currently available.

The lecture series is one of numerous programs being offered this summer as part of UBThisSummer. Other offerings include workshops, summer camps, seminars and special events.
