UB named a top nonprofit
by female executive group

Published: February 9, 2012

UB had been named one of the top nonprofit companies for executive women by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE).

NAFE each year produces a list of top companies for executive women, which includes the Top 10 nonprofits. The list is generated via a survey of companies that includes more than 250 questions on topics ranging from female representation, hiring, attrition and promotion rates to access and usage of key retention and advancement programs.

“The nonprofit companies selected by NAFE represent what is best about the leadership of organizations that have set themselves up to move women through the pipeline. They have given women executives the opportunity and have the women in top positions to prove it,” says NAFE CEO Carol Evans, who also is president of Working Mother Media.

NAFE is a division of Working Mother Media, owned by the Bonnier Corporation. Working Mother magazine publishes the annual Top Companies and the Women of Excellence lists. Visit the Working Mother website to view UB’s profile.

UB last year earned a spot on Working Mother’s 100 Best Companies of 2011.

As one of NAFE’s top nonprofits, UB was cited in particular for its Collaborative Performance Management Program, which “shows female managers how to guide and coach a team.”

NAFE notes that UB “offers a perk that few on this list can claim: Its female managers and executives can simply walk on over to its renowned School of Management and enroll in its Executive MBA program, or (if they have a little less work experience) sign up for a Professional MBA.”

It also praises UB for offering one free undergraduate course each semester for eligible employees, as well as “the wide availability of alternative work schedules (from flextime to telecommuting and compressed workweeks) that makes finding time to pursue their education even easier.”

Such access helps women rise through the ranks at the university, with women now filling 37 percent of executive positions and earning 34 percent of the highest salaries at the university, according to NAFE.

In addition to UB, the other nonprofits making NAFE’s top 10 list are Bon Secours Richmond Health System, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Mercy Health System, Moffitt Cancer Center, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, TIAA-CREF, TriHealth, VCU Health System and WellStar Health System.
