  • Suicide prevention training set

A free session designed to train faculty and staff in the nationally recognized “Question, Persuade and Refer” (QPR) suicide-prevention program will be held on Sept. 8 as part of Suicide Prevention Week activities at UB.

The session will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 210 Student Union, North Campus. Register online.

Faculty and staff also are invited to attend a free talk by student-athlete Jordan Burnham at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus. Burnham will speak about his experiences with depression, suicide, help and hope. His story underscores the idea that counseling can contribute to emotional wellness and that talking about what one is going through is a sign of strength.

Faculty and staff are encouraged promote the event to students and to other faculty and staff, and to make the event part of their coursework or offer extra credit to students who attend.

Presented by the Student Wellness Team, Suicide Prevention Week activities also include Wellness Activity Day on Sept. 7 featuring relaxation exercises, wellness/mental health education, yoga and an art activity, and the Out of the Darkness Walk on Sept. 17 to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

  • Apply for Metro Rail pass

Parking and Transportation Services is accepting applications for a limited number of free Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Metro Rail passes for 2011-12.

The passes, which are good for travel only on the Metro Rail, are being offered as part of a pilot program under an agreement between UB and the NFTA. The pilot phase of the program ends in August 2012.

There are 300 faculty/staff passes and 3,000 student passes available on a first-come, first-served basis to UB faculty, staff and students who live within 3/4 of a mile of the NFTA Metro Rail line or have responsibilities that require travel between the South and Downtown campuses.

Those eligible for the passes will receive stickers to be placed on UB ID cards and, when shown, can be used for free travel on the rail line only.

Applicants choose from one of two terms; fall 2011 and spring 2012, which will be valid through May 31, 2012, or fall 2011 and spring/summer 2012, which will be valid through Aug. 31, 2012.

Current rail pass stickers on UB Cards expire on Aug. 31.

The application for the rail pass program can be found on the Parking and Transportation Services website. Completed forms should be returned to Parking and Transportation Services, 106 Spaulding Quad, or faxed to 645-7331. Any questions regarding the NFTA pass program can be directed by email to ub-busing@buffalo.edu or by calling 645-7329. Applicants will be notified only if their application is not approved. Approved stickers will be available for pickup within five business days and renewing applicants will be offered a mail option.

The pass program, as part of UB Car Free, supports UB’s commitment to climate neutrality by its anticipated reduction in vehicles on and around campus.
