A team from UB’s Office of Career Services recently completed training in Six Sigma principles through a program offered by the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. The team used the Six Sigma approach to improve the speed with which new job postings appear in the BullsEye online career and job searching system, and to reduce staff time spent on the process. The UB team reduced the turnaround time on position postings from 11 days to 1 day, freed 10 hours of staff time per week and developed a reviewing and prioritization procedure for all incoming job postings. The efforts also resulted in improved employer satisfaction and improved student service.

The Center for the Arts video production group has been nominated for a 2011 New York Emmy® Award. The honor recognizes an informational video produced by the CFA for a national engineering organization. The project, titled “Industrial Engineers Make A Difference,” features industrial engineers in such diverse workplaces as Hershey’s, Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center, and is used to educate students about careers in the field. The piece, which includes several UB alumni, was created for the Institute of Industrial Engineers, in partnership with Rakesh Nagi, chair of UB’s Department of Industrial Engineering. The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presents Emmy awards in recognition of excellence in the television industry. The final winners will be announced on April 3.
