UB will celebrate academic excellence this year at two separate events—the first on April 6 for students and the second on April 21 for faculty and staff.

According to A. Scott Weber, vice provost and dean for undergraduate education, the university decided to split the seventh annual Celebration of Academic Excellence, the spring event in which it recognizes scholarly, research and creative accomplishments, into two programs based on comments from focus groups made up of faculty, students and staff.

“The feedback we received confirmed the idea that there was a need to enhance the program and better serve both populations by focusing on each one,” Weber says.

All members of the UB community are welcome to attend both programs, to be held in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

Faculty members are encouraged to attend the student-focused event on April 6 with their classes or request that their students attend the poster competition and exhibits.

Beginning at 1 p.m. on April 6, poster presentations by undergraduate investigators will be on display in the CFA atrium, and exhibits by student artists will be on view in the atrium and Mainstage theater. Doors open at 2:45 p.m. for the 3:30 p.m. ceremony, which will include a welcome by Weber and remarks by Officer-in-Charge Satish K. Tripathi, award presentations for students and their faculty mentors, and student performances.

The student program will recognize nominees, finalists and recipients of 19 prestigious state and national awards, including the SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence, Harry S. Truman Scholarship, Fulbright Program Scholarship, Morris K. Udall Scholarship, National Science Foundation Graduate Scholarship and Rhodes Scholarship.

The faculty program on April 21 will begin at 3:30 p.m. and recognize 2010 honorees, including SUNY Distinguished Professors, SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence recipients and UB Distinguished Professors. New this year will be presentation of the first annual UB Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, recognizing outstanding faculty mentorship and commitment to undergraduate learning.

A reception will follow the faculty ceremony in the CFA atrium.

Those interested in attending either event may register online.
