Obituaries

Leo A. Loubere, professor emeritus of history, died July 21 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. He was 86.

Born in New Orleans, Loubere left his studies at Tulane University to serve in the Army during World War II. He was wounded in Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart in 1944.

He returned to Tulane and earned a bachelor’s degree in European history in 1948. He received a master’s degree from Northwestern University in 1949 and a PhD in French history in 1953 after studying a year in Paris.

Loubere taught at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville for three years before joining the UB faculty in 1957. He rose through the ranks in the Department of History, becoming a full professor and later serving as department chair.

He wrote seven books and several articles about the evolution of the wine industry and viticulture in France and Italy. He also learned how to make his own wine.

An avid boater and tennis player, Loubere retired from UB in 1991.
