World-renowned violinist Elmar Oliveira will visit UB next week as part of a five-day residency sponsored by the Department of Music that includes several public performances and a master class.

Oliveira will open his residency on Sept. 10 with a special "September Welcome" Brown Bag Informance at 12:05 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

Those attending the event, which will be free and open to the public, will hear Oliveira offer brief previews of his Sept. 11 recital and have an opportunity to talk with him. As with all Brown Bag concerts presented by the Department of Music, there will be ticket giveaways and free coffee provided. The audience will be seated on stage.

The following day, Oliveira will present a recital of works by Mozart, Schubert, Handel-Halvorsen and Strauss at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall. Performing with Oliveira will be pianist Robert Koenig, professor and head of the Collaborative Piano Program at the University of California-Santa Barbara, and violist Sandra Robbins, who has been a member of the Ysaye Quartet, the Paganini Trio and the Bronx Arts Ensemble.

On Sept. 13, Oliveira will conduct a master class, featuring half-hour coaching sessions to a few select UB music students. The class, which will be free and open to the public, will begin at 2 p.m. in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus.

The residency will conclude on Sept. 15 with a concerto performance with the Slee Sinfonietta, UB’s professional chamber orchestra. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall. James Baker, principle percussionist with the New York City Ballet orchestra and percussionist with the American Composers Orchestra, will serve as conductor; Eric Huebner, who joined the UB music faculty this fall as a visiting assistant professor, will accompany on the piano.

Oliveira is one of the most distinguished violinists in the world today, championing both contemporary music and rarely heard works of the past, devoting considerable energy to the development of younger artists and enthusiastically supporting the efforts and art of modern violin makers.

He is the only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow's prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition. He also was the First Prize winner at the Naumburg International Competition and the first violinist to receive the coveted Avery Fisher Prize.

He currently is a Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Lynn University Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton, Fla.

Advance tickets for Oliveira’s Sept. 11 and Sept. 15 concerts are $12 for the general public, $9 for UB faculty/staff/alumni and senior citizens, and $5 for students. Tickets purchased at the door are $20, $15 and $8. Advanced tickets can be purchased at the Slee Hall box office, the Center for the Arts box office and at all Ticketmaster locations, including Ticketmaster.com.
