UB faculty and staff increased their giving to the university during the past year, with more employees participating in fund-raising efforts than the previous year.

The donations came through the annual Faculty and Staff Campaign—which ran from mid-March through June 30, 2009—as well as all other university-wide annual fund efforts during fiscal year 2009.

Faculty and staff gave $297,705 during the recently completed fiscal year, an increase of approximately 1 percent from the previous year’s total of $295,498; the number of donors increased by 4 percent.

“This is great news given the current state of our economy,” said Dawn Baumgarten, director of annual programs. “Once again, we see the generosity and caring of UB faculty and staff in action. As a result, we are able to offer financial assistance to the most promising students.”

About 60 percent of UB students qualify for need-based aid every year, Baumgarten explained, noting that financial assistance often can be the factor that decides a student’s choice of college.

“With the university’s plan to grow through UB 2020, annual gifts from faculty and staff also help UB attract the brightest faculty, who enliven classrooms and enrich students’ experiences,” she said.

“I am thankful for all the faculty and staff who gave this year,” she continued, “because annual fund gifts are all about students—scholarships, equipment, resources—all things they need. The annual fund supports UB’s mission of educating students. That’s something that should excite all of us. Thanks to the generosity of faculty and staff and co-chairs of this campaign—Warde Manuel and Robert Shibley—we were successful.”
