Funeral services were held May 12 for Alan D. MacPherson, professor and former chair of the Department of Geography, who died May 6 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital after a 10-month battle with cancer. He was 51.

He had served as director of the Canada-U.S. Trade Center in the geography department since 1995, and was department chair from 2002-07.

A native of Inverness, Scotland, MacPherson earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography from the University of Dundee in the United Kingdom, and a master’s degree in planning from Edinburgh College of Art in 1981. He also earned master’s and doctoral degrees in geography from the University of Toronto.

The Department of Geography is establishing a scholarship fund in MacPherson's name, and that of another former chair, James E. McConnell, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus. For more information, contact the department at 645-2722.
