Isaac Ehrlich, professor and chair of the Department of Economics, has been appointed by Gov. David Paterson to a new Council of Economic Advisors that will help him address the state’s fiscal crisis. Members of the high-powered group include former U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, former U.S Deputy Treasury Secretary Roger Altman and 2001 Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz, professor of economics at Columbia University.

Msgr. J. Patrick Keleher, director of the Newman Center at UB, was named the first chaplain of University Police at its awards breakfast on Aug. 4.

University Police Investigator Donald S. Kreger was named employee of the quarter for the second quarter of 2008. Kreger was recognized for his professionalism in responding to the death of an infant and assisting other responding officers with critical incident de-briefing. Officer Kevin Will received honorable mention for his professionalism and attention to duty displayed while assisting in two recent arrests. Lt. Timothy Thompson also received honorable mention in recognition of his work in the arrest of a burglary suspect who subsequently was charged with five felonies.

Venu Govindaraju, professor of computer science and engineering, and director of UB's Center for Unified Biometrics and Sensors, has received an Innovation Research Award from the Hewlett-Packard Co. to support his research into technology that would allow a user to automatically manipulate a computer through hand gestures.
