"James Joyce with Gusto," an evening of performances, readings, chat, music and song celebrating Joyce's work, will take place from 4-10 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

The event, part of The Buffalo News' "Gusto at the Gallery" series, is presented by the UB Humanities Institute. It will be free and open to the public.

The program will celebrate the writings of James Joyce, along with the university's internationally known James Joyce Collection, selections of which will be exhibited in the gallery.

The event will open at 4 p.m. with music by the Irish traditional music ensemble "Kindred."

This will be followed by talks by Margot Norris, professor of English, University of California-Irvine, and president of the International James Joyce Foundation, and Luca Crispi, James Joyce Fellow, National Library of Ireland, and former James Joyce Scholar-in-Residence in the James Joyce Collection at UB.

A panel discussion and question-and-answer session will follow.

The evening will continue with a screening of the documentary film "Following James Joyce...Dublin to Buffalo," directed by Patrick Martin and Stacey Herbert, and will conclude with a public reception in the gallery's Garden Restaurant.

For additional information, contact Josephine Hogan at 310-8029 or visit the Humanities Institute Web site at www. humanitiesinstitute.buffalo.edu.

Organizers of "James Joyce with Gusto" note that in 2000, three of Joyce's novels were elected by the editors of Modern Library as being among the "100 Best English Language Novels of the 20th Century."

"Ulysses" ranked first and "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," third. "Finnegans Wake" also ranked in the top 100.

The James Joyce Collection of the UB Libraries is one of the greatest in the world and is valued at $400 million. It contains the manuscripts and personal effects of James Joyce, the resources of his writer's workshop, his letters, the papers of his publishers, an important collection of family paintings and photographs, and virtually all important editions of "Ulysses" in English and other languages.

"Joyce with Gusto" is co-sponsored by UB; the Albright-Knox Art Gallery; the Poetry Collection of the UB Libraries; the Department of Comparative Literature; the Butler Chair and the Abbott Poetry Fund, both in the Department of English; Kennedy, Stoeckl and Martin P.C.; and the Irish Classical Theatre Company.

Parts of the UB collection and the documentary film to be shown during this event are included in the Joyce exhibition at the National Library of Ireland, the largest exhibition of its kind ever undertaken.
