The Bulls
went down to the wire in both of last week's contests. UB fell to Rhode
Island, 57-55, Nov. 29, as Brian Woodward hit a 10-foot jumper from
the left side with 2.2 seconds left to lift the Rams over the Bulls.
UB then followed with a 73-72 win over New Hampshire on Saturday in
Alumni Arena as Louis Campbell scored with 10.4 seconds to play.
Women's
Mt.
St. Mary's 66, UB 55
St. Bonaventure 56, UB 43
UB suffered
a loss at the hands of the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 66-55, Friday
in Alumni Arena.
The Mountaineers
outrebounded the Bulls by a 48-31 margin and hit 12 three-pointers in
32 attempts—37.5 percent shooting—to earn the victory.
The Bulls
shot 43.1 percent—22-for-51—from the floor, compared to the Mountaineers'
27.7 percent—18-for-65—but they were dominated on the glass and hurt
themselves with 26 turnovers. Mount St. Mary's had just six two-point
buckets in the game, but hit 12 three-pointers.
UB fell
to 1-4 with a 56-43 loss to St. Bonaventure on Sunday in the Reilly
Center.
Swimming
Men's
Bulls
place 13th at Miami Invitational
The men's
swim team finished 13th in the 17-team field at the Miami University
Invitational with 349.50 points as Kenyon College took the three-day
meet with 1,254.50 points.
Aviv Oren
placed 11th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.43 and won the "C" final
of the 100 breaststroke in 59.04. UB's diving tandem of Jim Taravella
and Jon Malarsky turned in strong performances on the one-meter board.
Taravella, a sophomore, finished 11th with 199.75 points, while Malarsky,
a freshman, took 15th with 180.70 points.
Women's
UB wins
Zippy Invitational
The Bulls
won the University of Akron's Zippy Invitational, scoring 1,361.50 points
to easily outdistance second-place Illinois State (1,267) and third-place
Cornell (1,066.50) in the 15-team, three-day meet.
Carrie
Quinlan won the 100 butterfly (56.91) and finished second in the 50
freestyle (24.29).
The Bulls
took the top two spots in the one-meter diving competition, with freshman
Tracy Hoover winning the event with 246.25 points. Freshman Kim Lahaye
finished second with 243.15 points.
Jennefer
Brankovsky won the 400 individual medley in 4:29.46, while the Bulls'
foursome of Abby Delia, Tiffany Woods, Quinlan and Brankovsky won the
400 medley relay in a season-best 3:54.03.
Wrestling
Cerminara
leads way in Las Vegas
Kyle Cerminara
came only one win away from placing in the top eight at 197 pounds in
the Cliff Keen Invitational, held in Las Vegas. He lost his opening
match to Fresno State's Marcio Betelho, who was seeded 12th, but then
strung together three victories—twice by technical fall and once by
major decision. His run came to an end, however, when eighth-seeded
Erik Gladish of Arizona State decisioned him, 7-3.
UB finished
32nd in the 32-team field.
Indoor
Track and Field
Bulls
open with victories at Colgate Invitational
Both the
men's and women's indoor-track squads opened the season with victories
at the Colgate Invitational. The men scored 146 points to beat Canisius
and Colgate in the three-team meet, while the women totaled 172 points
to down Canisius, Colgate and Hamilton.
Christina
Keck set a new school record in the 1,000, placing second in the race
in 2:54.87. The Bulls also had ECAC qualifying performances from Chrissie
Matthews in the high jump (5-6 1/2), Biaunca McFarland in the triple
jump (39-5 1/4) and Faith Thompson in the weight throw (53-11 1/2).
In the
men's meet, Sheldon Battle set a school record and qualified for IC4A
competition, winning the shot put with a toss of 53-8. Joe Clark also
qualified for the IC4A meet by winning the 500 meters in 1:04.42.
Volleyball
Kus
named new head coach
Sally Kus,
a veteran coach at the collegiate, high school and club levels, and
perhaps the most-recognized name associated with the sport of volleyball
in Western New York, has been named head volleyball coach at UB.
She replaces
Nadine Lilavois, who resigned after three seasons with the Bulls.
Kus comes
to UB after four successful seasons coaching at Daemen College. She
was named Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000, and guided
the Lady Warriors to a 27-9 overall record and a 19-4 conference mark
this past season. Prior to taking over the reins at Daemen, Kus transformed
the Sweet Home High School volleyball program into a national powerhouse.
