Football

Ohio 42, UB 20

Chad Brinker ran for two touchdowns and quarterback Dontrell Jackson had 14 carries for 139 yards as Ohio rolled to a 42-20 Mid-American Conference victory over UB.

After Ohio opened the scoring, the Bulls tied the contest at 7-7 when Joe Freedy hooked up with sophomore Andre Forde for a 61-yard touchdown.

The Bobcats grabbed the lead for good, 14-7, early in the second quarter when Jamel Patterson scored on a five-yard touchdown run. Raynald Ray added a 20-yard TD run with 96 seconds left in the half for a 14-point bulge.

Brinker dominated the third quarter with touchdown runs of five yards and one yard in a six-minute span for a 35-7 cushion. Backup quarterback Freddy Ray fired a 39-yard scoring pass to Raynald Ray early in the fourth for a 35-point lead.

The Bulls scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close the gap. Albert Grundy scored his first collegiate touchdown on a four-yard run, capping a 20-play, 92-yard drive that consumed more than 7 1/2 minutes. The Bulls tacked on their final TD with just 28 seconds remaining in the game as Freedy hit Theron Walker for a six-yard score, closing an 11-play drive.

Soccer

Men

Duke 4, UB 0
UB 2, Radford 1

The men's soccer team was outmatched against the nationally ranked Duke Blue Devils, losing its third straight game, 4-0, in Durham, N.C., to begin a two-match, non-conference road swing.

After three straight shutout losses, the Bulls broke their losing streak and scored all the goals they would need in less than a minute of play to record a 2-1 win at Radford.

Women

UB 4, Northern Illinois 0
UB 1, Western Michigan 0

The women's soccer team started off its four-game road stretch in perfect fashion, recording a 4-0 win at Northern Illinois in MAC play. The Bulls were led by Paula Listrani's two goals and an assist, which moved her past the 100-career point mark.

In the weekend finale in Kalamazoo, Mich., it was a battle between two of the top teams in the MAC, and it came down to Listrani's record-setting goal in the second overtime period to carry UB to a 1-0 win at Western Michigan. With the game-winning goal, Listrani recorded her 103rd career point, setting the UB school record for most career points.
Athletes of
the week
Tony David of the men's cross country team finished 25th in a field of more than 250 runners at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University. David was UB's top finisher in the eight-kilometer race with a time of 25:17.37. The Bulls placed 14th of 36 scoring teams with 436 points.

Paula Listrani of the women's soccer team scored two goals, including the game-winner, and assisted on a third goal in a 4-0 win over Northern Illinois. She also scored the game-winner in a 1-0 double overtime victory at Western Michigan, setting the school record for career points with 103. She now is one goal shy of the UB career goals record of 43 held by Nora Bender (1985-87).


Volleyball

Akron 3, UB 0
Miami 3, UB 1

Ball State 3, UB 0

The women's volleyball team lost two quick games and could not come back, losing to the Akron Zips, 15-2, 15-5, 15-10, to open the week. The Zips committed just nine errors during the entire match, compared to UB's 21, and Akron's .381 hitting percentage propelled them to victory.

UB continued its road trip in Oxford, Ohio, falling to Miami in four games. The Bulls earned a 15-8 win in the opening game of the match, but then dropped three games in a row to lose the match.

The Bulls concluded their weekend with a three-game MAC loss at Ball State, 15-1, 15-4, 15-9. With the win, the Cardinals remain undefeated in the conference with a 6-0 record, while Buffalo falls to 0-6 in the conference and 4-13 overall.

Cross Country

Women place 11th, men 14th at Lehigh University Paul Short Run

Both the men's and women's cross-country teams competed at the 27th annual Lehigh University Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. The men's team placed 14th among 36 scoring teams, while the women were 11th in a field of 34.

Tennis

Men's

UB 7, St. Peter's 0

The men's tennis program moved one step closer to going undefeated in its fall schedule with a 7-0 win over Saint Peter's in the UB Tennis Center.

UB started off strong with wins from two of its three doubles pairings.

The Bulls then moved on to singles competition, where they swept all six matches.

Basketball

Women's

Senior Tiffany Bell has been chosen to the 2000 Preseason All-MAC Women's Basketball Team, the league office has announced. Bell joins Cheryl Bowles of Akron, Kristin Koetsier of Western Michigan, Francine Miller of Bowling Green and Stephanie Smiley of Eastern Michigan on the five-person team selected by members of the MAC News Media Association.
