Women's Sports on the Web

The Sydney Olympics celebrated the centenary of women's participation in the modern games. While only one-third of all athletes at the games were women, their strong presence was a welcome sight and a reflection of the growing popularity of women's sports. About.com guide Karen J. Gould has an essay on Olympic women with "Famous Firsts" and "Fun (and not-so-fun) Facts" http://womensissues.about.com/library/weekly/aa082300a.htm. Now that the games are over, the Web is full of informative sites to keep interest in women's sports at an all-time high.

Speaking of About.com, its Sports and Women page http://womensissues.about.com/newsissues/womensissues/cs/sports/index.htm lists links to a wide variety of women's sports issues from "Women, Injuries and Training" to "Anna Kournikova Cover Story." WWWomen reaching women, which bills itself as "The Premier Search Directory for Women Online" presents on its "Women's Sports" page http://wwwomen.com/category/sports1.html a list of individual sports that leads to extensive directories within each sport.

For a different approach to the traditional list of Internet sites, The Feminist Majority Foundation: Women and Girls in Sports page http://www.feminist.org/gateway/sp_exec2.html posts a list of Internet Resources with a feminist slant. And don't be put off by the journalistic "look" of Sports for Women.com http://www.sportsforwo-men.com/contents/index.html. It contains not only the latest headlines, but also a chat room, articles on training, and top selling books.

Popular news and stories are represented with online versions of two classic print publications, Women's Sports & Fitness http://www.phys.com/wsf/home.html and Sports Illustrated for Women http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/siforwomen/index.html. And if you still haven't had your fill of women's sports, all the major news networks feature the latest updates; however, CBS Sportsline.com http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/women/ and NBC Sports http://home.nbci.com/main/channel/item/0,4,-6724,00.html?st.sn.sr.0.6724 both have directory pages with links to other Web sites on the topic.
