Arthur J. Schaefer, clinical professor of ophthalmology and a clinical assistant professor of otolaryngology, died Oct. 4 in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness. He was 77.

A 1947 graduate of the UB School of Medicine, Schaefer was regarded as a pioneer in his field, setting up Buffalo's first oculoplastic surgery clinic in the early 1960s at the former E.J. Meyer Memorial Hospital, now Erie County Medical Center. Schaefer, first introduced to the field during the 1950s in postwar Korea, where he worked as a captain in the Army Medical Corps and chief of ophthalmology in the 121st Evac Hospital, later returned to Buffalo to set up his clinic specializing in eyelid surgery.

Schaefer, who in 1995 was the first Buffalonian to receive UB's Lucian Howe Award for contributions to the field of ophthalmology, most recently was involved in private practice in Snyder with his son Daniel, and also served with him as co-director of the oculoplastic clinic at ECMC.

A graduate of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and alumnus of Canisius College, Schaefer later received an honorary doctorate from the college, where he and his wife established the Dr. Arthur J. '43 and Elizabeth A. Schaefer Scholarship Fund for pre-med students.

Schaefer was an active member of Western New York's medical community, serving as a consultant in ophthalmology at numerous hospitals and in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at the John M. Lore Jr. M.D. Head and Neck Center at Sisters Hospital.

He served as director emeritus of the ophthalmology service at both Sisters Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital in Cheektowaga, and also served as director of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at Buffalo General Hospital and ECMC.

Schaefer, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Ophthalmic Surgery, also was a past president of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
