International Affairs on the Web

The WWW Virtual Library: International Affairs Resources Web site at http://www.etown.edu/vl/ is an invaluable source of information for anyone teaching, studying or dealing with international relations.

More than 2,000 annotated links on a wide variety of political, geographical, sociological and business topics have been thoughtfully assessed and organized by Elizabethtown College professor Wayne Selcher.

The "Getting Started" section features many useful tips for doing Internet research, plus lists of pertinent library Web pages and online map collections. "Media Sources" is next with links to current news, live radio and television broadcasts, and topical, online journals. The third section, "Organizations," connects to U.S. government, European Union and United Nations gateway sites, as well as a large assortment of non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations.

"Regions and Countries" categorizes hundreds of Web sites about Africa, Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, plus many more general listings dealing with broader regional and cross-cultural issues. The final section is simply titled "Topics" and treats diverse subjects that don't fit into any of the preceding categories. These lists provide an international perspective on such wide-ranging issues as American foreign policy, business, education, conflict resolution, foreign languages, human rights and religion.

Many of the linked sites are conveniently searchable by themselves. The overall WWW Virtual Library, which currently comprises 14 broad subject areas, also can be searched in its entirety from its home page at http://vlib.org/Home.html. "Regional Studies" at http://vlib.org/Regional.html is another of its subject areas directed at many of the people who will appreciate "International Affairs Resources."

Helpful UB Libraries Web sites dealing with international relations include the Business and Government Documents Reference Center's "Other Governments and Inter-Government Organizations" Web page at http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/lml/Government_Doc/othergov.html and the Law Library's "Foreign and International Law" site list at http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/law/remotesites/foreign.html.
