Luis A. Colan, associate professor of chemistry, has assumed the position of North American editor of The Analyst, a scholarly journal covering all areas of state-of-the-art analytical and bioanalytical science.

Maurizio Trevisan, professor and chair of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, has been named a member of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Study Section of the Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health. Study sections review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.

Six faculty members have received awards for 2001 under the Environmental Science Interdisciplinary Research Program of the Environment and Society Institute. Joseph F. Atkinson and John E. VanBenschoten of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering received $8,500 for their project "Use of Holographic Imaging to Study Particle Aggregation as a Fractal Process. Janet R. Morrow, Alexey V. Eliseev, Jim D. Atwood and David G. Hangauer of the Department of Chemistry received $9,820 for their project "Incorporation of Green Chemistry into an Undergraduate Lecture and Laboratory Course and the Application of Combinatorial Chemistry to Metal Ion Separation."

Chunming Qiao, associate professor of computer science and engineering, recently received several grants from major networking companies, including Alcatel Corporate Research Center ($45,000), Nokia Research Center ($67,000) and Telcordia-formerly Bellcore-($100,000). Qiao's research interests cover the two converging areas of computers and communications, include parallel and distributed computing and systems, interconnection networks and photonic switching. He currently is conducting research on fiber-optic Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) networks and internetworking based on a new paradigm called optical burst switching (OBS). He also is conducting research on next-generation wireless systems with integrated cellular and Ad-hoc relaying technologies.
