Heather Collins of the women's soccer team led the Bulls' defense to a pair of wins at the Buffalo Invitational. UB downed Canisius, 7-1, in the season opener and followed with a 1-0 win over Duquesne. Collins, a senior, led a defense that allowed just five shots and one goal in the two contests, including holding Duquesne to one second-half shot when the Dukes were trying to rally from a 1-0 deficit

It was over almost as soon as it began as the UB women's soccer team scored in the first three minutes of the game against Canisius and cruised to a 7-1 win in the first day of action at the UB Invitational.

The Bulls got on the board early as Elizabeth Pfeffer scored at the 3:46 mark for the 1-0 lead. Last year's team scoring leader, Paula Listrani, followed up with her first goal of the new season at the 11:08 mark for a 2-0 lead. Then it was time for the UB freshmen to get into the scoring act. Emily Russell scored her first career goal at 25:30 on an assist from Listrani, and less than two minutes later, freshman Robin Aparo scored for a 4-0 UB lead. The Bulls would add one more goal in the first half as Devon Russell, twin sister of Emily, would score her first career goal at the 40:47 mark and UB went into half-time with a 5-0 lead.

In the second half, the Bulls again wasted no time, as Linnaea DiNallo scored three minutes into the half to make it 6-0. Emily Russell then converted her second goal of the game off an assist from fellow freshman Nicole Olszewski, her second assist of the game. Canisius would spoil the UB hopes for a shutout on a goal from Jen Gwizdowski at the 74:48 mark for the 7-1 final score.

The Bulls outshot Canisius 40-3 in the game and had 10 corner kicks to the Golden Griffins one as UB controlled the game throughout. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Cox recorded two saves in the game while giving up one goal.

The Bulls defeated Duquesne, 1-0, to wrap up the Buffalo Invitational. UB was on the attack early and it paid off in the first nine minutes. Pfeffer took the ball and drove into the box, where she was taken down by a Duquesne defender, resulting in a penalty kick. Listrani took the kick and shot it past the goalkeeper on the right for a 1-0 Buffalo lead. That lead would hold for the rest of the game, despite numerous attempts by UB at a second goal. The Bulls outshot Duquesne, 23-2, on the game, and had many near misses in the second half. Listrani took a pass from Olszewski in front of the goal, but her shot went just wide and another UB shot later in the half hit off the left cross bar. The Bulls defense held tough and prevented the Dukes from getting any clear looks at the goal. Jaime Adams recorded her first shutout of the season in the win, recording one save in the process.
