Cedric Smith, professor of pharmacology and toxicology, was featured in an episode of the ABC-TV news show, "20/20," on Monday that examined the nature, prevalence and consequences of alcoholic "blackouts." Smith has conducted research with Cynthia Pristach, associate professor of clinical psychiatry, on the effects of blackouts on subsequent drinking.

Venky Sarangan, a doctoral student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, is the winner of the Best Presentation award from the International Congress on Computational Intelligence Methods and Applications for his paper, "Comparative Analysis of Fractal Dimension Estimation and its Application to Biomedical Image Analysis."

Mary Ann Jezewski, associate professor in the School of Nursing, is the 1999 recipient of the Oncology Nursing Education Research Grant from the ONS Foundation/Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. The $7,500 grant is designed to stimulate quality research in oncology-nursing education. Jezewski's research is entitled "Oncology Nurses and Advance Directives."

Carolyn A. Ingram, a doctoral candidate in the UB School of Nursing and an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., is the 1999 recipient of the ONS Foundation/Smith Kline Beecham Oncology Research Grant. The $8,500 grant is designed to promote oncology-nursing research in the area of nausea and vomiting management. Ingram's research is entitled "Predictors of Weight Gain in Women with Early Stage Breast Cancer."

Timothy D. McKernan and Michael P. Vosseller, students in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, won second place in the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) International Student Research Undergraduate Competition held recently by the Special Interest Group in Computer Science Education in New Orleans. The students' project, "Performance Improvement in CORBA Applications," was selected for significance of research.

Lewis Mandell, dean of the School of Management, is hosting "Your Business," a weekly radio program airing from 7-8 a.m. Saturdays on WNED AM 970. The show examines issues common to owners of small- and mid-sized businesses and provides listeners with the opportunity to call in questions about how to better manage or start a business.

Drawings and other works by Harvey Breverman, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Art, are being exhibited in the Chancellor's Gallery at State University Plaza in Albany.

Ashim Garg, assistant professor of computer science and engineering, presented a paper, "Almost Bend-Optimal Planar Orthogonal Drawings of Biconnected Degree-3 Planar Graphs in Quadratic Time," at the 7th International Symposium on Graph Drawing-the primary conference devoted to visualizing graphs and networks-held in Stirin Castle near Prague in the Czech Republic. He was invited to submit the paper to a special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications.
