Athletes of
the Week
Kamau Halim of the indoor track team was a second team All-Mid American Conference selection and placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 48' 2 3/4" to earn the Bulls eight points at the MAC Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan University last weekend.

Sarah Fletcher of the indoor track-and-field team and swimmer Inger Rooneem are co-female athletes of the week. Fletcher became UB's first track-and-field MAC champion as she won the 25-pound weight throw with a toss of 58' 2". Rooneem is UB's first double-MAC champion, as she won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke at the conference championships hosted by Ohio University.

UB 72, Akron 55

UB used a 15-2 run and 58 percent second-half shooting to defeat Akron, 72-55, in the first round of the MAC Tournament held in Alumni Arena.

The Bulls (18-10) will travel to Cleveland to face top-seeded Kent (22-5) today in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament.

The win also broke a five-game losing streak for the Bulls, as well as a streak of five consecutive home losses.

The 15-2 run early in the second half increased a 31-30 UB lead into a 46-32 cushion from which the Bulls never were threatened. Mari McClure scored seven of her game-high 22 points, including a pair of three-pointers, during the run. McClure shot 50 percent (5-of-10) and scored 17 points in the second half. The 22 points also was a season-best for McClure.

Men

Miami 67, UB 58

The men's basketball team dropped its final regular-season game Saturday, falling 67-58 to Miami in Alumni Arena.

The Bulls had a great first half, taking control of the game early and jumping out to a big lead. Trailing 4-2 after the first five minutes, the Bulls put together a 23-1 run, dominating the game over that eight-minute stretch. But Miami maintained its composure and came back with an 11-2 run of its own. UB went more than four minutes without a field goal during that stretch as its lead was cut to 11 points. Miami ended the half on a 9-4 run and UB went into halftime with a 36-26 lead.

Miami came out strong in the second half, slowly eating away at the Bulls' lead. Jon Kleidon was the Bulls only scorer early, hitting for five of his career-high 12 points in the first five minutes of the half. The RedHawks used a 10-0 run over a four-minute span to retake and extend the lead before UB cut it back down to one on two occasions. But from that point, Miami slowly built its lead to as many as 11 points late in the game.

Women

UB place sixth in MAC Championships

Inger Rooneem saved the best for last in her collegiate career.

Rooneem The record-breaking senior became UB's first double champion in a MAC championship event at the MAC Women's Swimming Championships held at Ohio University. The host Bobcats won the event with 816 points, while the Bulls finished in sixth place with 285 points. UB broke eight school records at the event, while Rooneem earned first-team All-MAC honors for the second straight year.

Rooneem began her incredible performance by winning the 50-yard freestyle in an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time of :23.18 on the first day, a time that also smashed her own school record. In addition, she was also the anchor leg on the 400-yard medley relay team, which finished fourth in a time of 3:52.75, also a school record.

On the second day of competition, Rooneem helped the Bulls to a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay before claiming her second title by winning the 100-yard backstroke in a time of :56.94.

The Bulls also got strong performances from senior Kim Theetge and sophomore Dawn Hickey. Theetge finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.6, while Hickey finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:58.52.

On the final day of competition, Rooneem finished second in the 100 freestyle with a time of :51.56. Hickey also finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:49.59, which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships.

Men

UB finishes seventh in ECAC Championships

The Bulls finished seventh out of 36 schools at the ECAC Championships held in Sewell, N.J. UB scored 257 points in the three-day meet. Maryland-Baltimore County won the meet with 599 points.

The Bulls will compete in the MAC Championships, being held today through Saturday at Bowling Green.

Indoor track and field

Women place 7th in MAC Championships

Men place 10th in MAC Championships

Junior Sarah Fletcher became UB's first champion at the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships held last weekend at Eastern Michigan University.

Fletcher's performance helped the UB women place seventh of 11 schools with 25 points, while the UB men were 10th with 19.5 points.

Fletcher won the 25-pound weight throw with a toss of 58-2"-which also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships-winning by nearly two feet over her nearest competitor.

Tennis

Men

The Bulls played a pair of matches indoors Saturday at the University of Rochester. In the first match of the day, UB knocked off Ithaca 5-2. The Bulls then downed the home-standing Yellow Jackets, 4-3, to complete the day's sweep.
