Men's
Marshall 73, UB 63
UB 57, Northern Illinois 47
The men's basketball team hosted two MAC opponents last week, losing to Marshall, 73-63, on Feb. 17, but earning its first conference win against Northern Illinois, 57-47, on Saturday.
Against Marshall, Buffalo played a strong first half, trailing 39-33, despite shooting 50 percent from the field. The Bulls were led by sophomore Louis Campbell, who netted 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Maliso Libomi added 11 points for UB, while Alexei Vasiliev had 10. Senior center Nate Johnson matched his career-high with 10 rebounds.
Campbell scored a game-high 17 points and added eight rebounds to lead Buffalo over Northern Illinois. The win snapped a 16-game losing streak for the Bulls, dating back to a win over Hawaii-Hilo on Dec. 29. The point total was the fewest UB has given up since an 80-47 win over Chicago State to close the 1996-97 season.
Campbell's eight rebounds matched a career high. He also hit four three-pointers to spark the Bulls' offense.
Meanwhile, junior Jon Kleidon had a career-high 10 rebounds and Libomi had a career-best eight blocked shots to pace the UB defensive effort. Libomi's eight blocked shots are the third-best total for a game in school history, tying him with Kelvin Robinson, who accomplished the feat during the 1993-94 season.
On senior night, Johnson had seven rebounds, four points, two assists and two steals.
Women's
Akron 84, UB 58
The women's basketball team lost its lone MAC game of the week as it dropped an 84-58 decision to host Akron on Saturday.
Samantha Cerny and Mari McClure scored in double figures for Coach Cheryl Dozier's squad, with 12 and 13 points, respectively. Tara Perrier added nine points off the bench.
Wrestling
Cornell 28, UB 6
UB 28, Duquesne 15
The wrestling team lost to Cornell University, 28-6, at Spencerport High School Feb. 18 and defeated host Duquesne, 28-15, in the Bulls' final dual meet of the season on Sunday.
Against Cornell, the Bulls got two victories from a couple of the team captains. Jacob Schaus won a 2-1 overtime decision at the 174-pound weight class. The win improved Schaus' record to 30-9 on the season as he became just the 13th wrestler in UB history to record a 30-win season, and the eighth under current head coach Jim Beichner. Matt Ricci was the only other Bulls winner, taking a 9-6 decision at 184 pounds. Ricci improved to 21-10 on the season.
UB got early wins at Duquesne from John Eschenfelder at heavyweight and Brian Schaal, who recorded a pin at 125 pounds. Despite those two wins, the Bulls trailed 15-12 before taking the last four weight classes to secure the win.
The four straight wins to end the meet started with Jake Partlow at 157 pounds with an 8-6 decision. Gary Cooper returned to action after a mid-season injury to record a 6-5 win at 165 pounds and Schaus continued his impressive season with a 10-2 win, improving to 31-9 on the year. Ricci then finished things off with a win by fall for the 28-15 victory.
