UB 24, Liberty 27

The Bulls saw a tremendous second-half rally go awry as host Liberty University tied the game in the final minute of regulation before pulling out a 27-24 overtime win over the Bulls before 10,831 fans in Williams Stadium.

The Bulls trailed 21-3 in the third quarter before rallying with 21 straight points to take a 24-21 lead with under five minutes to go in regulation. However, the Flames drove 34 yards in six plays to force UB's first overtime in school history.

In overtime, the Bulls were stopped on a fourth-and-inches play at the Liberty 16 on their first possession. The Flames, meanwhile, drove to the UB five before Harrelson kicked the gamewinner from 22 yards out.

All-American candidate Drew Haddad became UB's all-time leader in career punt-return yardage in the game and also went over the 2,000-yard mark, receiving 10 catches for 166 yards.

Volleyball

UB 1, Western Michigan 3
UB 0, Central Michigan 3

The women's volleyball team was unable to get a Mid-American Conference win while on the road this weekend, losing in four games to Western Michigan on Friday (8-15, 5-15, 15-11, 6-15) and in three games to Central Michigan on Saturday (1-15, 9-15, 5-15). Junior setter Somer Deschambault led the Bulls this weekend, totaling 51 assists in the two matches.

Crew

Women's

The UB women's crew team traveled to Philadelphia this weekend to compete in the Head of the Schuykill regatta.

The lightweight eight continued to make up time on lightweight powerhouse Villanova, coming in second place with a time of 16:18. The women's heavy 4-plus rowed to an 18th-place finish with a time of 18:31. In their first race, the novice team posted a strong effort, placing 25th in a field that included teams from Princeton, Syracuse and Michigan. Its time was 19:16.

Swimming

Women's

UB 161, Youngstown State 70

In its first meet of the 1998-99 season, the women's swimming team was victorious at Youngstown State, defeating the Penguins, 161-70, on Saturday. Sophomore standout Inger Rooneem paced the Bulls with four first-place finishes in the meet.

Soccer

Women's

UB 0, Kent State 1

The women's soccer team lost a hard-fought game Sunday afternoon, falling, 1-0, to Kent State in overtime.

Kent got the gamewinner in the first overtime period on a goal by Kelly Haggard, assisted by Nicki Downey, at the 95:39 mark, just five minutes into the extra session.

The Bulls played most of the match a man down as Tracey Britton drew a red card in the 24th minute. Despite playing one down, UB dominated the first half, outshooting Kent, 8-0, but could not capitalize.

The second half saw Kent wear down the Bulls. The Golden Flashes outshot UB, 7-2, in the second half. The only shot in overtime proved to be all that was needed by Kent.

Men's

UB 3, Northern Illinois 4
UB 1, Marshall 3

It was a back-and-forth battle, with Northern Illinois prevailing, 4-3, over UB in men's soccer action Friday night. With the loss, the Bulls drop to fourth place in the MAC standings.

Tied at 2-2 at the half, the Huskies took a quick lead in the 52nd minute, but the Bulls came back as Brian McCallion netted the equalizer, his second goal of the evening, on an assist from Frank Butcher in the 74th minute. As time wound down, both teams were attacking to avoid overtime. An NIU shot was knocked away by UB goalie Jim Schoenberg, but Mike Gentile put the rebound back in for the Huskies for the 4-3 win.

UB took the early lead in the first half. Steve Butcher assisted McCallion on a goal in the seventh minute on a breakaway. Butcher then scored his team-leading 14th goal of the year in the 28th minute for a quick, 2-0, Bulls' lead. NIU fought back with two late goals to tie the game at 2-2 at the half.

The Bulls also lost, 3-1, on Sunday in Huntington, W.Va., to Marshall. The Thundering Herd stabbed the Bulls early, scoring all three of its goals in the first half. Sophomore John Shannon scored UB's only goal at 76:00 in the second half off an assist from Brian McCallion.

Tennis

UB 5, Cleveland State 4

The women's team faced Cleveland State in its final match of the fall. UB's No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams lost, 8-3 and 8-6, respectively, while the No. 2 doubles team of Jen Wong and Kris Vanschoonhoven won its match, 8-2. Danielle Rakowsky (No. 3 singles), Wong (No. 5 singles) and Vanschoonhoven (No. 6 singles) won their matches to tie the meet, 4-4. The deciding point was the No. 1 singles match between senior Annulett Dillon and Brandi Cerna. Cerna won the first set, 6-4, and Dillon took the second, 6-4. In the third set, Dillon saved six match points and came back from a 5-1 deficit to beat Cerna, 7-6, in the tiebreaker.

Athlete of the Week

In her last match for UB, senior women's tennis player Annulett Dillon defeated Brandi Cerna of Cleveland State to finish her career with a miraculous win. Dillon saved six match points and a 5-1 lead in the third set to beat her opponent, 7-6, in a tiebreaker and help the Bulls defeat Cleveland State, 5-4.

All-American candidate junior flanker Drew Haddad gave UB's comeback a jump-start with an electrifying 82-yard punt return for a touchdown with 7:39 to go in the third quarter. It was Haddad's school-record second punt return for a score this season and the second-longest in UB history, behind Haddad's 94-yard return for a score against Cornell this year.
