Basketball

Men's
UB 67, Western Illinois 68
UB 68, UMKC 78

The men's basketball team fell to 13-12 on the season with a pair of losses on the road against Western Illinois on Feb. 19 and the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Feb. 21.

The Bulls lost to Western Illinois, 68-67, when the Leathernecks hit a 10-foot jumper with 12 seconds to go. Mike Martinho lead the Bulls with 20 points. Seniors Rasaun Young and Matt Clemens also were in double figures.

On Saturday, Young became the school's all-time leading scorer in a 78-68 loss at UMKC. Young, who also had nine rebounds, hit 11-of-16 shots from the field en route to a game-high 30 points that left him with 1,840 points in his career. Martinho added 15 points, while senior Scott McMillin had nine points and nine rebounds for the Bulls.

Women's
UB 64, Western Illinois 62
UB 80, UMKC 79

The women's basketball team scored a pair of exciting road victories to improve to 16-9 overall and 10-5 in the Mid-Continent Conference.

The women opened their road trip with a 64-62 win at Western Illinois, as senior Charissa Gardner scored six points in the final 1:44 to lift the Bulls to the win. Gardner finished with a game-high 24 points and three steals. Samantha Cerny added 12 points for the Bulls.

The women won their third-consecutive game on Feb. 21 in a thrilling 80-79 double-overtime win at UMKC. The Bulls forced the first overtime when junior Catherine Jacob hit a three-point shot with 23 seconds left. Jacob finished the game with 13 points. In the first overtime, Gardner had four of her career-high 28 points before UMKC rallied to tied the game at 71-71 and force a second overtime.

Senior LaToya Crumpton provided the winning points in the second overtime with a pair of jumpers as UMKC missed a final shot with five seconds to go. Crumpton finished the game with 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.

Wrestling

UB 34, Duquesne 6

The wrestling team defeated Duquesne University, 34-6, on Feb. 21 in Alumni Arena. Honored before the meet began, the Bulls' three starting seniors each scored a win to lead UB. Senior 142-pounder Jeromy McVige scored his career-best 29th win, senior 150-pounder John Stutzman won his 92nd career bout and senior 167-pounder Matt Ricci captured his career-high 20th victory with a win-by fall. Junior 118-pounder Brian Schaal and freshman 177-pounder Josh States also pinned their opponents.

Swimming and Diving

Women's

The women's swimming and diving team captured its fourth consecutive Mid-Continent Conference championship and 12 Bulls' swimmers earned all-conference honors this past weekend in Indianapolis.

UB finished with 920 points, ahead of Western Illinois (649 points), Valparaiso (632 points), Central Connecticut (449 points) and Youngstown State (352 points). Head coach Dorsi Raynolds was named Mid-Con coach-of-the-year for the third-straight season. Sophomore Inger Rooneem was named the swimmer-of-the-year, freshman Carol Cottingham was named the newcomer-of-the-year and junior Kim May was named the diver-of-the-year.

Cottingham set a conference record in the 100 breaststroke, while Rooneem swam a Mid-Con record 50.89 in the 100 freestyle. In addition, Rooneem qualified for national consideration in the 100 backstroke and the 50 and 100 freestyle for the NCAA Championships, a first for the UB women's swimming program.

Men's

After leading the first two days of competition, the men finished second at the Mid-Continent Conference championships this past weekend. Western Illinois edged UB, 868.5 to 858.5, to win its third-straight Mid-Con title, while Central Connecticut (742.5) and Valparaiso (348.5) rounded out the field. The Bulls had 12 swimmers and divers named All-Mid-Con selections, including five to the first team. Bulls' sophomore diver Dave Sofer was named the conference's diver-of-the-year after winning the one-meter diving competition, while Jason McLachlan captured the 200 IM and Jose Moncuion won the 50 freestyle.

Tennis

Men's

UB 3, University of Rochester 4

The men's tennis team faced the University of Rochester on Feb. 20 in Rochester. Senior Orrin Pridgen and sophomore Richard Poveromo each won individual matches for the Bulls. UB also captured doubles matches.

Indoor Track and Field

The men's and women's track-and-field teams finished sixth and fourth, respectively at the Mid-Continent Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 21-22. For the men, freshman Kamau Halim finished second in the triple jump (45-11.25), while junior teammate Victor Archibald was third (45-9.25). Senior Famu Gakodi was fourth in the 400-meter dash (49.90), while Rashidi Greene also finished fourth in the 35-pound weight throw (49-4.25).

On the women's side, junior Shelly Hamilton captured the women's high-jump in a school- and meet-record 5-9.75, provisionally qualifying her for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Other top finishers for the women included junior Ruth Conlon, second in the 20-pound weight throw (53-0.25), and sophomore Melissa Ryan, who finished third in the 55-meter hurdles in a school-record 8.34 seconds.
